Here are the current gas prices around the world. Prices are converted to

    US$ and US Gallons.

    Netherlands Amsterdam $6.48
    Norway Oslo $6.27
    Italy Milan $5.96
    Denmark Copenhagen $5.93
    Belgium Brussels $5.91
    Sweden Stockholm $5.80
    United Kingdom London $5.79
    Germany Frankfurt $5.57
    France Paris $5.54
    Portugal Lisbon $5.35
    Hungary Budapest $4.94
    Luxembourg $4.82
    Croatia Zagreb $4.81
    Ireland Dublin $4.78
    Switzerland Geneva $4.74
    Spain Madrid $4.55
    Japan Tokyo $4.24
    Czech Republic Prague $4.19
    Romania Bucharest $4.09
    Andorra $4.08
    Estonia Tallinn $3.62
    Bulgaria Sofia $3.52
    Brazil Brasilia $3.12
    Cuba Havana $3.03
    USA Average $2.87
    Taiwan Taipei $2.84
    Lebanon Beirut $2.63
    South Africa Johannesburg $2.62
    Nicaragua Managua $2.61
    Panama Panama City $2.19
    Russia Moscow $2.10
    Puerto Rico San Juan $1.74
    Saudi Arabia Riyadh $0.91
    Kuwait Kuwait City $0.78
    Egypt Cairo $0.65
    Nigeria Lagos $0.38
    Venezuela Caracas $0.12

So if many of these countries have to refine their own gas,

which many do like America, how can they sell it for such a low cost?

I don't see Canada on your list. When I bought gas yesterday it was $1.02 a litre. So around $4.00 a gallon.

Gas prices may suck but after you adjust for inflation we're still better off than in the 70's.

The South African government has always said that we were lucky the price is so low, and is planning on increasing it by quite a significant amount next year (as well as increasing inflation, since we're still spending way too much). Oh, and the housing price has almost doubled (though analysts are predicting a collapse of the real estate market, putting the thousands of agents who took advantage of the boom at risk of losing their jobs), and car prices are ridiculously high (I hear that last year Johannesburg residents alone bought more new cars than all the cars, old and new, existing in the country of Zimbabwe). Capitalism and supply/demand is a big fat paradox...

one thing i don't get... if we (Brazil) produce all of our own oil, how come our gas is so expensive?

It is the same thing here in America, we produce allot of our own oil only to

sell it overseas so that the oil companies can make higher prices for

themselves. Then they turn around and buy oil from OPEC and say that they

must charge more because OPEC is charging them more. In actuality the oil

companies are getting more profits from both ends of their oil dealings.

well, the brazilian oil company, Petrobras, is majorly owned by the government, and supposedly we dont sell oil to outside the country

The same thing in Venezuala, they also have their oil companies owned by the government but look at how low they charge their people. It seems your government is taking advantage of its people doesn't it?

I'm pretty sure Petrobras exports oil....
Still, ther are other things that must be considered when analyzing the price of gas in Brasil. Exportation is only one of many. Take for instance, demand. The demand for oil per capita in Brasil is actually lower because we are heavy producers and users of ethanol, from our sugar canes! Because of that, there is a greater incentive for people to buy ethanol as opposed to gas, since we export a lot of gas. Now, the method by which you extract the oil is also significant. Petrobras leads the world in this, because they get it from the ocean. We have the best technology for that. Of course, this may be a slightly more expensive method, however. Anothe factor is the refinement of oil. How many refinaries do we have? How expensive is it to refine oil in Brasil? (That alone raises lots of questions). Environmental law may also play a role.
