Do you want a good cheap small pocket type or a really nice professional type?

It depends what you wanna do with it.
Nikkon and Cannon are supposed to be excellent cameras. As wel as Olympus.
Olympus has very qualitive digital cameras.

I have both Olympus and Mamiya.
    Great cameras!

This is what I have and it works just fine and is very easy to use. It also

uses 2 AA batteries so they are easy to buy. The camera is small enough to

fit into a shirt pocket and is very lightweight. I bought mine at Brands Mart

for $75.00 so you will find the same price eleswhere I'm sure. It has an Optical Zoom lens also.

If your budget allows buy one with a Lithium-Ion battery, AA's suck bigtime.
I would recommend a Nikon. The Nikon Coolpix P5000 is a cool one, maybe a bit above your budget though.

The Lithium batteries are very expensive and sometimes take up to 4 hours

to full charge. The AA's are cheap and easy to replace when they are used

up. When the flash is used both batteries use allot of their stored up energy

so try to keep the flash off as much as possible. Any camera you choose

should be easy to use as well as having a large LCD view screen so that you

can see and read the instructions easily. The camera I posted has a 2.5

inch view screen so it is very easy to view.

Have a look at the Panasonic Lumix. Very popular with 12x optical zoom and good features. Shouldn't be more than about $200 in the new money.

It's quite a big little fella though, so won't fit in your pocket, or possibly even your handbag!

I have had a cam that used AA's and it was a pain. True, Lithium batteries take some time to get charged but it's worth the 'wait'. It's sensible to buy an extra battery though, in case you run out of juice while in the middle of nowhere.
I hardly ever use flash, it ruins your pictures.

This baby (Nikon Coolpix 8700) is awesome for a consumer cam, easy to use and the best quality you can expect from a consumer cam. Plus macro is awesome. Also notice the flip-out and twist LCD monitor, quite handy !

Failing that, I'd go with Canon - great picture quality.

Mine has a 2.5 lens which is very good for the price. Most have a 5.2 or so which isn't as good at all.

I do, I have an oooold Powershot S45. 4 Megapickles! 3x optical zoom! Chunky metal casing, weighs an absolute ton!

    Ohhh, the shame.

It's still going strong though and takes fab pictures. I'm willing it to break so I can upgrade but it just keeps going and going. Oh well.

I may sell it and re-invest at some point and if so, right now, I'd go for the Lumix and that lovely 12x optical zoom (actually they've just brought out an 18x version).

(The confused might at this point want to note the difference between optical and digital zoom - don't be fooled).

    But yes - I love my S45.

It's probably personal but I find Canons horrible although they are obviously good quality.
They are overpriced and the handling is just not for me. Oh well, to each his own I guess

Anyhow, the macro quality is by far the most important to me. The 8700 really excels in that.
