A comet usually too faint to be seen with the naked eye has brightened by a factor of a million for the past 36 hours.

"This is equivalent to the planet Saturn suddenly becoming as bright as the Full Moon," David Morrison, senior scientist at the NASA Astrobiology Institute in Moffett Field, California, US, wrote in an email newsletter. "I have never before seen anything like it."

Can't even report direct news without exaggeration, can you? :bugeye: "Million"? Hah! Less than a half-million, in fact - 400,000 times.

And although it's not too common, this has happened several times before with other comets.

MattMarr. Thanks for the info. I have a great view north and will check it out tonight.

Truthseeker. Read up about comets, their origins, makeup and size. Quite interesting.

Yep, still naked-eye. Ridiculously easy in binoculars, but looking with naked eye, you can pick it up well with averted vision.

Since comet 17/P Holmes is now considered to be a "life time astronomical event" among astronomers why we still don't see any pictures of the comet from the world's biggest telescopes? Is it just because they have schedules which can not be changed even if there is a "life time event" under way?

None of the NASA psy-ops who were "debunking" Matt Marriott for about 24 hours before banning him and later closing the thread (2), replied to this key question. If you are still confused, is it because you are not aware of the the basic facts? (3)

I can think of three different explanations:
    1. Those telescopes are designed to look at objects that have a very, very small apparent size. Some of them literally cannot see something as big as Holmes.
    2. The smaller telescopes are doing just fine imaging Holmes. We use those big telescopes to see things that smaller telescopes cannot see.
    3. They did.

At least bad astronomy has sense. To the sciforums illuminati: Do you have the same sense?
