Hmm. I like the platypus - don't get me wrong, some of my best friends are platypussies - but for me the sine qua non of amusing and interesting animals must be - yes! - the tuatara: Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Like a lizard, but not a lizard. You beautiful sauropsid bastard.
Some other things about the platypus: ten sex chromosomes (males being XYXYXYXYXY), but no SRY factor, sharing genes with ZZ/ZW systems; eats 20% of body weight per day; cheek pouches; reptilian gait; electroreception. Fuck.
The platypus is the perfect symbol for Australians. It's wierd, not completely explainable, and seems to thrive on being perversely out of sync with the rest of the world. Sure, you'd love to own one - one might even say that it would be cool - but they're dangerous and bizarre and would probably want to eat all your vegetable paste or poison your dwarves, making them unsuitable for tossing. And if they got loose, they might wreak havoc with your wildlife, say by developing a TV show where they run around and catch dangerous things to prove they can't get bitten. No: the platypus, like the Australian, should remain - forcibly if necessary - in its home continent, where it's predilection for swimming in crocodile-infested waters and its ten sex chromosomes are at home, making Australia best for Australians and the world frankly a little safer to live in.
What about Echidna's do they have a similar genetic make-up ? Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
