Let's say you are offered a mission/trip to somewhere in the universe. It could be anywhere......planet, unknown space location, distant star, etc.
BTW - there is no guarantee that you will ever successfully ever make it to the destination in question, or live to see it (perhaps it will take a time more than your own lifespan).

The ONLY constraint is that it is a one way trip
You will never return to earth - no matter how hard you tried (it is both impossible and 99.9% improbable that you will ever return assuming you ever became incurably homesick.

My question --- what would it take to make you go? What would you need (assuming price/technological limitation excluding that which results in being able to go home is no object) to convince to to take the one way trip?

If Earth was going to be hit by a huge meteor or the Sun is expected to overgo a catostrophic cataclism, i.e., I'd go when the risk of staying would be greater.

does it have an expandable nanorobot spaceship device mechanism? The sort of thinny were you push on a teddy bear and it excretes a device of many nanorobot machines that use surrounding atoms to make a spaceship using fission? if yes...than I am in.

I'd send my clone with a transmitter to tell me and show me what's there. That way I can be two places at the same time!

If they can send me anywhere in the universe then I'd think that cloning would have already been developed, wouldn't you?

Go where? anywhere other than Mars or the moon youd be spending the rest of your life literally 'going' and never getting anywhere. And if you ever went to the Moon or Mars it would still be living in a tin can.

I get antsy after 3 or 4 hour on a plane....let alone the rest of my life in an even more restricted environment of a spacecraft. within a week I'd be psycho if I couldn't get outside, feel the sunshine and go for a walk. Tin can or bubble living is my idea of hell.

    In order of importance:
    • Ability to communicate with home. Let's see, with today's propulsion technology and the acceleration limit of my body, how far can I go in a lifetime? If it's so far that the lightspeed-lag of radio waves grows to more than a few days, I'll probably demand some kind of sci-fi communication ability that keeps that lag reasonable and gives me access to the internet so I can play games and keep up with the news and entertainment.
    • A dog. Better yet a small pack of dogs so they can breed and I'll always have one.
    • Music, but that should come with the communication and the internet.
    • Enough room to avoid getting cabin fever and to get some exercise. For me that wouldn't be a deal-breaker, probably 1000 sqft. (100m^2)
    • Artificial gravity so I can stay healthy.
    • My favorite foods. My wife's homemade chocolates for starters. I would get bored out of my mind with spaceman rations.
    • Some really really good drugs.
    • Oh yeah, it would be nice if the trip had a purpose. With today's technology it will be impossible to reach another solar system in my lifetime (or even your much longer lifetime). Even worse, relativity and the probability of life on other planets say it might take as long as half a million years to reach another civilization. So why am I out there? This is starting to sound like a really boring government job.

Can I get satellite TV up their?

I would go provided, the group of fellow travelers was great enough, perhaps a hundred or more.

This scenario is nearly possible with current technology.

A ship built in lunar orbit of concrete

(using moon regolith as aggregate) sufficiently thick in the forward direction of travel could go a long way in mitigating the increasingly potent impacting particles at near light speed. The ship would have to stop once in a while to find material to replenish this "cow catcher."

    The propulsion

could be from a current nuclear power plant such as that of an aircraft carrier. The power output would be sufficient to create a magnetic field redirecting the approaching particles and accelerating them slightly. Even a small acceleration would increase their mass and impart sufficient forward thrust.

As the mass of the craft increases according to special relativity, 1 g acceleration could still be maintained relative to the crew, according to special relativity with the same energy output. Frames of reference at rest to the craft, however, would see the craft accelerating more slowly and more slowly, never obtaining full light speed.

The crew would, however, see no difference. And would achieve distances of 10,000 light years in what they perceive as only a few weeks. However, 100 centuries would have passed on Earth. The crew could explore many star systems and orbit many planets in their lifetime. They could reach the far side of our galaxy. They could even return to Earth.

However, if they circumnavigate the galaxy before returning to Earth, 3,000 centuries will have passed on the Earth. They may find civilization on Earth was wiped out ages ago or they may find a "welcome home" party awaiting their return.

Or the most exciting possibility, shortly into their journey, they may find an "Earth Space Force" cruiser catch up to them. The intrepid crew may escorted back to Earth and rewarded for their adventurous spirits with commissions in space fairing Earth vessels which had been developed in the hundreds of years since their departure.

    Lets go!!

Obviously no one in their right mind would choose to go since it would involve leaving sciforums. [In space you can't hear BaronMax.]
