Rally star McRae and son killed in crash

Police have confirmed that the former world rally champion Colin McRae and his five-year-old son were killed in a helicopter crash.

Two others, including a six-year-old boy, also died when the chopper came down near McRae's home.

McRae, 39, an experienced pilot, had been flying the Twin Squirrel helicopter back from a visit to the nearby village of Quarter to his home at Jerviswood, near Lanark, when it burst into flames at around 4.10pm on Saturday.

McRae became the first Briton to win the World Rally Championship drivers' title in 1995 and hails from a well-known motor-racing family in Scotland. He was runner-up in 1996, 1997 and 2001.

McRae is survived by his wife Alison and the couple's daughter, Hollie.

McRae's father, Jimmy, is a five-time British rally champion and his brother, Alister, is also former British rally champion.

Air accident investigators are carrying out a full investigation into the cause of the crash.

Strathclyde Police initially said that the damage was so bad from the accident that they did not know how many people were on board.

Helicopter are so dangerous, I really think people should think twice before buy one.

Have you also read that McRae's manager or trainer (or something) also crashed his helicopter, yesterday. Also the enviroment cost is very high.

Helicopters are more difficult to fly than planes, there is also the concerns of static discharge when landing caused by the rotors. Coupled with the fact that any updrafts or even airflow from the rotors 'eddying' off nearby walls can cause instability in vertical takeoffs and landings.

It's why for the most part commercialised pilots tend to use grass 'runways' to accumulate both speed and get lift without having 'eddies' effecting them.

As for the cost to the environment, they do burn fuel however certain types can be seen as used during brush fires attempting to airlift water to the inaccessible locations to put out the fires. In those cases they actually outweigh their environmental cost by attempting to save woodland.

What makes the crash worse is the fact that it was the loss of two generations of McRae

At first I thought it was just one of those internet rumors. There were threads about this on every forum.
Apparently it's true. Being a rally fan for over a decade, this is especially disheartening. Maybe I should get an 'In memory of Colin Mcrae' sticker or something for my WRX.
I wish he had beaten Travis Pastrana in the X Games instead of rolling his car again.

    RIP

the shocking thing and maybe even slightly ironic part of this story, is the fact that he didnt die in a car crash *shocked*.

    R.I.P

    peace.

I know, right. As many crashes that happen in rally racing, combined with those two 'planned' rolls (this and last year's X games), you would think that one of those would have gotten him.

yeah, i mean when i first read he "died in a crash" i just assumed it was a car crash ofcourse. then seeing "helicopter crash" it just shocked me, you just kind of expect a car crash when you read that.

    peace.
