If they thought that it was going to be a big problem they wouldn't let it come back without some type of fix.

That damage is only about 3 inches wide and about 3 inches deep. The tiles are about 6 inches deep so the tile isn't damaged all of the way through so still can stand the heat. Seeing that the tile is also located on the underbelly of the vehicle it isn't as criticle as if it were on the wings leading edge.

If they had thought, Challenger and Columbia would still be in service. Screw the environmentalists, expand the stupid foam using Freon.

Let me think, it is minus 100 degrees in space or less , freon in a can is about freezing and won't do a thing to repair the hole. where do you come up with these ideas?

A method used in shuttle tile repairing:

    * pre-ceramic polymer sealant and carbon-silicon carbide powder, known as Non-Oxide Adhesive eXperimental (NOAX)

    but...guess what...

Endeavor crew decided not to apply it...they don't have time.

We have had the technology since the 1960s to make it so that our astronauts could park the shuttle in a repair bay and fix it, or if they couldn't fix it, to take an emergency capsule home. Instead, we have over-engineered and over-priced crap for a space program. They should have months up there if that is what it takes instead of having to run home to beat the storm. Rushing to beat a storm is a cause of automobile accidents also.

I don't. It's a rubbish statement from someone who hasn't a clue what they are talking about.

I heard on TV that the crack goes all the way to the aluminum. I honestly don't think the shuttle can survive something like that.

You do know that the shuttle lands in California(almost always), right?

John F. Kennedy Space Center uses the NASA Shuttle Landing Facility in Titusville, Florida for the primary landing site of the Space Shuttle fleet.

The California one is a backup

Never mind the "and." Here's the story:

    http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/space/08/19/shuttle.undock.ap/index.html

It's Dean that they are worried about, even if the hurricane is over on the other side of Florida, and they want Mission Control at Houston to be up when the shuttle comes down, wherever it lands. So the shuttle has to beat a storm that isn't likely to hit where it is going to land.

    Endeavor or Remember??

Yea, a big hole in Endeavor. Don't these guys ever learn? Challenger had the O rings freeze up that morning was below freezing, Columbia had a paper cut on it's wing, and now the big gash can be the escape route for the gases that will find it's way to that spot. Duh???? I would'nt agree to this if I were on that ship now!!
