I saw them off the coast of Maine before, it was strange. I never knew there was a sound associated with them...

He's probably full of crap. The Northern Lights occur high in the atmosphere, so there's probably no sound.

I've seen them during the winter here but I live in the south so I haven't gotten the full effect. They had quite a show in Oslo one night this past winter

We don't usually see them much in Oslo

There is no sound. We get them quite frequently and the night sky is ripples from horizon to horizon in waves of purple, green, mauve, etc. On a scale of one to 10 the Northern Lights are at a 10 for natural phenomena and everything else would be a 3 or so. It's almost futile trying to describe them when in full glory. The whole universe is a big organic beast rippling back and forth across the entire sky.

The most spectacular I've witnessed was on a glacier in the Canadian Rockies. The sky was afire but to top it off the ice was reflected back an eerie red glow. It was as if standing on a piece of glass with no floor below and no ceiling above...everything seming to sway although one's feet were as anchored to the ground.

I used to live right up on the Yukon border, we'd get them every winter and sometimes in summer too. Greens, reds, purples and the occaisional blue. The purples and blues were really spectacular because they'd shift around much faster than the greens and reds, but usually only lasted a few minutes at a time.

This is still my favorite picture:

    Yes, while in Alaska.

And no, they are FAR too high to make any sound. None at all.

Ha! Only with a radio receiver - not with your unaided ears! (Clearly, you've NEVER seen them!)

Why did you claim that it is possible to hear the Northern lights?

As someone who lives in the Northwest, I do hear sounds with the Northern lights.

Do you want to give me another infraction for that too?

    Willy:

You hear sounds like "breaking wind" when you see the Northern lights?

This is the first time I've heard such a report. Can you produce any online references to similar reports from other people?

(By the way, infractions are only given for breaches of the site rules.)

You already told me I'm "trolling" by just claiming to hear the northern lights.

Do you want to ban me for feeling that way?

Is it possible they are far too high for us to hear it? If I was up there, could I hear them? Do animals seem to notice them?
