Okay one incredibly smart, good looking and intelligent man I know is wearing a gold earring; since otherwise he is ultra formal, this sort of stands out (even though the gold ring is thin and small and only in one ear).

Its completely something you would not expect on a man like him, or at least thats what I thought.

    Comments?

(By nature he is sharp, funny, but intolerant of stupidity and inefficiency)

I wear a silver stud in one ear...
the actual answer is, of course,
he thinks for himself, makes his own rules and discards those he has no use for.

He's a pretty much "by the rules" type, which is why its so weird.

Depends upon the rules, you stated that he's intolerant of stupidity and inefficiency.

    Meaningless conventions are stupid.
How much more efficient is it to wear a "jarring note" to indicate that he's smart and can think for himself?
It saves a lot of explanation.

Hmm he likes people to be afraid of him and respects those who are not.

    Does that sound unconventional?

    He does?
    That's...
Nope, sounds arrogant in the extreme.
Why would anyone want someone to be afraid of them?

What's the big deal? It's just a piece of metal. Would you think the same about a gold watch?

    Which ear is it?

Apparently, I learned from peers whilst at school, depending on which ear an earring is on a man, he could be telling the world he's a homosexual. Which ear would make him gay, I'm not too sure, but I think they rotated them from time to time.

Why don't you ask why he has an earring?

Well if it was always there, it wouldn't be unusual, its just weird to see a man in his forties suddenly get a earring, that's all.

Maybe you're right. Its no big deal

    Nah, he's not gay.

Can't ask him this year, maybe next year.

Your OP didn't state that it was sudden - I'd assumed it was an old one he'd worn for years until you said.

Okay, reasons for a man in in his forties to get his ear pierced:

change in circumstance (marriage broken up, for example).

"mid-life crisis" - not so much a crisis, IMRHO, as a realisation that things are "different" from what they were, and he's taking a stand against "whatever".

a realisation that he can do what he wants since it's up to him how he lives his life (it comes extremely late to some of us

    Ok
    Nope
He doesn't behave any different than he used to. Still the exact same, except for the earring.

Of course not, he has an "office persona" carefully built up over the years and to change behaviour as well (suddenly) doesn't work.
    I should know...

As was I, when I got my ear done and my first tattoo - exactly the same person and behaviour while at work, or with old friends.
I just went out and found somewhere new where I could be the "new me".

Didn't you and go through this last year?
    Pah, rebellious side.
