Guawd. How the hell do I log into MSN Messenger, .. What I need help with thou is changing my firewall I think. That's what it said on a help screen, anyway. So on Windows XP , where is this "firewall" located? How would I change it, in order to log on?

Any help is appericated, thanks.

You're not running service pack 2?

Click start, control panel, network and internet, network, right click on the icon you're currently using for internet, click properties, click "advanced"

Thanks man. But my firewall box was un-clicked... And I still can't connect to messenger. What do you think is the problem? Should I click the box?

Are you running a virus scanner, or 3rd party firewall program (IE - zone alarm)?

I don't know. I doubt i'm running a virus scanner- don't know about third party , don't know how to find out,

I'm pretty SOL it looks like :P Damn. How do I find out if these things are stopping me? Where would I look, first off if or not a virus scanner would stop MSN messenger, or the firewall program, zone alarm?

Make sure all the icons in your system tray are showing. Take a screenshot and post it here.

If you are going through a Router to connect to the internet you will find that it likely has a hardware firewall which will be blocking many of the MSN ports. (Usually you can connect to write messages but file sharing, speech etc will be nerfed)

If your Router is UPnP compatible what you need to do is make sure you've turned that ON, but also make sure you have PORT-FORWARDING turned OFF.
Basically if you have a Manually entered Port-forwarding allocation is overrides the UPnP method of dynamic allocation, so you basically can run both UPnP and manual settings, it's either one or the other.

UPnP will deal with any MSN ports as and when they are needed.

If unfortunately you don't have UPnP, then you are going to have to enter each port manually.

(you might like to search for some other port lists as it might not have all of them)

I don't know. I doubt i'm running a virus scanner- don't know about third party , don't know how to find out,
third party in this instance would mean a program that was written by someone other than microsoft or the computer maker. zone alarm is a third party firewall, ad aware is a third party anti spyware
