That is very perceptive. As a matter of fact one of the best sitcoms 'threes company' was copied from a British show, it even states this in the credits, and many more throughout the 70s and 80's but i am sure it goes the other way too.

It doesn't always work, though. The American version of Red Dwarf was a flop.

Yeah, probably. I would like to see a list of the t.v shows that were copied by either U.S or U.K. The British shows i have seen on Ch. 21 and BBC were very good.

Why do Americans copy British shows? For the same reason we have Spiderman 3, Transformers the movie, Police Academy 127 and so on.

The Office is terrible too, somehow its not as funny in an American context.

The Office relied on subtlety and understatement - something almost never found in American humour. No wonder it doesn't translate very well.

it was worse than a flop!! it was FUCKING (excuse the language) awful!

red dwarf is a british show and some americans wont understand the humour in it

and I LOVED it!! I happen to understand and like British humor anyway - like shaggy-dog stories.

My favorite character in the British version is The Cat. ("This is mine... this is mine...") Holly is another often overlookd favorite. ("There's an emergency going on... it's still going on.")

Couplings (the original British show) was brilliant. And then the Americans decided to do their own version.

One thing that upsets me, which I think the UK is taking from the US, is constant narration and reminders of things that have happened in the show. Useless comments and usually in a Northern accent.

Mythbusters, when it's shown in the UK has this. It's unneccesary to hear some Northern wanker simplify what the hosts are saying and condescend you.
