So this Nicolas Sarkozy guy won.

Is'nt he with the 'conservative' party?

They did'nt go for the Socialist, wonder why?

I read he is 'pro Amererican' is this true?

    Only 34 cars were burned.

They dont show too much of France on TV here, i have seen quite a few riots, maybe they just got tired of them.

You know, taken as a whole, even the frogs have to be sick of living in an insipid wasteland that doles out government services to slackers and illegal immigrants.

Yay France! I wonder of the balls they just grew will weight them down?

I don't know if they've turned the corner just yet.

Remember, this is the nation where the students took to the streets last year because they were afraid they wouldn't be getting a government job...

Did you know that more than half the people in France work for their government?

Except for the fools who work for McDonalds! (which, if memory serves, makes more money in france than it does in the USA)

    Socialists Lose!

Sarkozy (Sarko) has won the hotly-contested race. He is pro-American and a conservative. Thank God the French finally got some intelligence. He said we could count on France's friendship.

He plans to try to do something about France's RIDICULOUS workplace regulations, including making it easier for private businesses to fire incompetent and malingering employees.

He said he believed deeply in European integration, but appealed to France's partners to understand the importance of social protection.
"Voters have chosen to break with the habits and the ideals of the past so I will rehabilitate work, authority, morality, respect, merit!" Um..good luck with that one.

The socialist candidate, Segolene Royal, had plans to make government even bigger! She was going to increase the minimum wage and create a half-million government jobs for young people. She also wanted 120,000 units of new welfare housing per year. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

Please people. The cultures of France and America are totally different. Take off your America glasses for once and stop with the "French grew some balls" or "French actually have some intelligence...".

And as the cultures are different, so are the political systems.

And sandy, is Bush a socialist too? He expanded government control and the size of the government.

I support Sarkozy and his market reformation policies. I think it will do good for a country that had relied strictly on socialist platforms for the past few decades. It will help revitalize the economy and hopefully other European countries can do the same. We need more competition in the world.

My only contention is that Sarkozy might be a trade protectionist. In any case, I hope things work out for France.

I have to say, MattMarr may have a point with the voting machines. I find it hard to believe that the French voted for a conservative candidate.

Er, what? Chirac was a conservative. This election saw the socialists defeated for a 3rd time in a row. In fact the last time round, the French 2nd round was between Chirac (the right winger) and Le Pen (The Far Right)

Puh-leez! Like somehow YOU are the breath of fresh air giving us insight into the inner workings of French affairs. Whew! Thank GOD you arrived just in time to set us straight.

I have no clue as to your political know-how, but I'd be willing to put my own against you or anyone else on this site. I spent a year and a half studying in Europe as an exchange student. I worked there and I lived there. I've spent more time flying OVER France (let alone visiting there) than most people spend IN the country in their life.

Earth shattering! Yeah. They are differnt. USA= 5% unemployment, capitalist. France=12+% unemployment, socialist. Don't fool yourself into thinking that we are SO different in much else. The French have been push-over pussies on pretty much every internal and external issue that has come their way. Name one UN resolution that they didn't find a way to back down from, or one NATO resolution that they didn't squeel like a stuck pig about?

And yeah-- the French finally grew some balls. I can judge them just as easily as the rest of the whiny liberals on this page judge the USA.

No... he's a fuck-up... but NOT for any of the idiotic reasons most people spout. He's abandoned the ideals of limited government and limited foreign entanglements that were the core of the Republican party. For that he should be ashamed... but for little else.

How does this make them push-overs? What you go on to say suggests the exact opposite - typical French stubbornness.

The UK unemployment rate is 2.9% even though we have far more state control than the US. The official estimate for socialist Sweden is around 5.5%, though some estimates put it at up to 3 times higher. Norway's mixed economy: 3.5%, but the cost of living is high, suggesting that, um, unemployment isn't the be all and end all. France's is 8.7%, by the way - not 12. Cuba: 1.9% Heh. Do you trust these figures? I think there's some room for manoeuvre.

    Funny.

France is trying to do its part to reduce global emissions of carbon dioxide by burning cars in ever-increasing numbers.

Sure, there's a short-term spike in carbon emissions, but then there's fewer emissions from automobiles.

Who have thought that anarchists and jihadi-wannabes are Greens?

France has voted for fewer cars. Go Sarkozy!

Respectefully, I could not possibly care less. Why not a "left handed only" sub forum... or a "likes pepperoni only on pizza" sub forum.

    CIA World Factbook?

Yeah, I trust the figures. But dig a little deeper. The French "socialst" system of a 35 hour work week, cumbersome legal restraints on small businesses, and ridiculous red tape on large businesses make for a poor industrial environment. Sarkozy is a good start... now for parlamentary elections this summer.

Why not give the conservatives a chance? If they blow it, it's just more suffering, and unless terrorists like Al Qaeda, Saddam Hussein, or George Bush are destroying your communities with bombs, suffering doesn't seem to matter much in the West.

From an American standpoint, though, when the French firefighters struck for retirement and pension at age 50, even my liberal fancy cringed. Well-intended ideas like socialism often go awry. (Take a look at Christianity in the U.S., for instance.) And the backlash may be a bit destructive, but it's their country, and every act of creation requires an act of destruction. Let the future write its history in time. If the French only make themselves more miserable, Americans at least can take comfort while sharing a plate of freedom fries with their freedom poodle and freedom-kissing their lover, that "the damned Frogs deserve it".

What an asshole you are. France didn't partake in your prophet Bush's war on Iraq because they have a democracy, meaning the people didn't support entering your Bush war and the Conservative Chirac followed their call. WTF do you know about France? Nothing but Conservative rule since champagne socialist Mitterand was in power and you jump on the dimwitted Rush Limbaugh France bashing train. Is it over Normandy? Jealousy? The fact they have a democracy? Because they aren't free market cutthroats? They have more elderly than the US by leaps & bounds, because of a strong social safety net. The heatwave that killed so many was because of so many French over 90 years of age.
There are social welfare abusers but simply because a country has built in nets to help those struggling with illness or joblessness doesn't mean all that use it are abusing the system. Just hope you never need help in your future.
Jumping on the France bashing train is sooo tired and done it only makes trailer trash laugh. Yippee string! Maybe FOX will give you yer own show!

This comming from an un-educated queen. And all because I have a difference of oppinion than you. Genji-- I take it as a point of great pride that someone of such complete and total unimportance thinks so. That I got under your ridiculously thin skin is only the icing on the cake.

LOL! Your ignorance comes shining through so easily when irritated. Got a little sand in your pussy, eh Gengi? I can't stand Bush... I can't wait 'till he's out. Just because I hate liberal wanna-be do-gooders like you, doesn't make me a Bush supporter.

Well, I studied for a semester in Le Havre (in case your exponential ignorance extends to your knowledge of geography [I'm guessing it does], that's in France... Normandy to be exact). You? I was also a foreign exchange student in Madrid for six months and the Canary Isands for a year. I've also spent numerous "other" times (bought a three month Eurail pass a while back and treked across Euorpe, spending much time in southern France, where, interestinly enough, I did find the French to be so... non French in all the best ways) but I be you know more than I do, right Gengi? I'm sure you'll find a way to pull out the measuring stick and tell me how you know more than I do... the way all uneducated liberals do.

My, my... you are a tempermental little troll. Sandy down there indeed. Actually, I'm a libertarian... I hate moralistic assholes like Limbaugh. The most I've ever listened to him was in passing on the radio when I'm bored with my CD's.

Jesus Christ, princess... what are you blathering about? Normandy? Eh... funny... I lived there for a while. You? Oh-- and I'm part French, so why would I be jealous? Over their democracy... because we are SO unenfranchised here in the USA. What a totalitarian regime we live under! Poor us... how horrible life is for the majority of Americans. Better stop ranting on this website, Gengi and warn all the poor, helpless people dieing to get into this country to stay away from this pathetic land. Heatwaves? People 90 years of age? WTF? Christ, take a pill Nancy. The French have hordes of blue-hairs... WOOPIE! Move to France then (good luck finding a job, hippie) OH, and don't forget your burkah-- no good muslim woman should be cought without one, especially these days in France.

If it's so tired, then why have a total palsy over it then squeel like a little girl who just lost her Barby Doll? Great... you're a socialist. How about bringing up some facts to support the French way of doing business... perhaps you could talk about the thriving economy, burgeoning muslim population that is a festering sore weighting to explode, or the low, LOW unemployment. I mean, why work when the unemployment compensation is HIGHER than the minimum wage, eh?

Ahhhh... Gengi, you are turning out to be the shining light on this website. So easily prodded... so easily manipulated. Let her rip Mary!
