View Full Version : Donate your body

I really don't care what happens to my body after I am gone. There is a way how one can actually help science, I might go that way. You can donate your body to your local university or medical research center in the hospital.

Or just google "donating body".
Would you donate your body?

I'm donating my body to the incinerator.

No offense, and that's all honorable, but they can go fuck themselves.
How about "donating" my health care? Then i'll donate my body.

I shall tell you a secret, something nobody knows except you (now). I wouldn't want to donate my body, but not because I'm evil or stuck up, it's because I'm afraid if I did and someone used my organs they'd end up all depressed and suicidal like I tend to be. I wouldn't want anyone to feel the lonliness or pain I do sometimes...

Live your life with moderation and you won't need health care.
But seriously, what do you need your body for AFTER your death????
P.S.: You can actually get MONEY for it!!! ;)
You are absolutely correct and this is the morally correct approach. You have no need for your body after you depart, so why not allow others to learn from it to advance our knowledge about humans and health by donating it to science.

That's a pretty fucked up thing to say.
I, personally, am not so sure that I would take a donated eye - I'm likely to just have a prosthetic eye made.

theres actually a guy...somewhat known, who mummifies bodies of people who originally donated their body to science, and uses them in his art shows....theres always that to consider.

I figured as much.
So tell me, what's your body worth to you?
What do they pay?

I do not hope the same thing. I hope you realize your wrong to wish for evil. Because I do not wish you the same.

I am not sure, still trying to find out. looks like kidneys actually worth a lot:
"In North America it's illegal to sell a kidney. This isn't to say people haven't tried; recently someone tried to hawk their kidney on eBay, only to have it pulled by the site -- but not before the price reached epic proportions. There's good reason for this: At this moment, at least a million people worldwide need a kidney, and quickly."
So far for the whole body what I have found was a free cremation and travel (of the body).

I don't wish you wrong. I wish you to get educated. I used an analogy...Looks like it worked... :)

In Optometry School I disected cadavers. These were people who had donated their bodies to science. Since our focus was on the eye, we had more heads than cadavers and actually had four or five buckets full of human heads. We used these to learn the anatomy of the head backwards and forwards.
It was somewhat disturbing to think that these disembodied heads were once living breathing people and now reside in a bucket full of heads.
Still, without their donation, doctors would not be able to learn anatomy properly. And, of course, the alternative is rotting in the ground.

MorTality, my man, morTality... :)
By the way, what is the problem with proving a point? I wished him that he could find out on his own how important is to have OTHERS donating their bodies...

When I recently went to get my new health card because some asshole stole my wallet (no I won't get into that again)
They asked me if I wanted to donate my tissue and organs if I die. I said sure why not. So I have this little card in my wallet now. It asked if you wanted to donate it purely for transplant situations only or for medical research. I ticked off for transplants only.
Now I was wondering because I remember a discussion a while back with some ppl. They said they thought that if they knew you were donating your organs after you died that they wouldn't wouldn't try as hard to keep you alive?
I said come on really? What do you think, that whole idea is nuts or do you think there is some truth to it?

Nah, that's just a bullshit story that's morbid enough to be entertaining... which is why people repeat it as if it's true. Like the creepy stories about kidney thieves, snakes in ball pits, hook-hand, razors on the waterslide, needles in coin-return slots, and so on. Fun to retell, regardless of their lack of substance.

Its why my husband won't donate. I think his Mom told him that and he believed it. I promised I wouldn't donate his organs. If it saves someones life though, I'm gonna anyways.
If he didn't want to because of religious reasons, I wouldn't. Or just for a lab or med school I wouldn't.
Hell, he's gonna be dead, its not like he's gonna care.
Me and the kids are donors. My son wants to be a full body donor, but I don't know if I could do that. Its just different when they are children.

Shit I hope that my man will follow with my wishes, esp if he makes a promise to me. I could never promise him something, then just disregard his wishes, break my promise and do whatever the hell I wanted just because he was dead. It would be just like he knows I want to be cremated, then I die and he says fuck it I am going to bury her because she has no say in it anymore.
That's one really nice marriage....:bugeye:

I want to be cremated for one reason..
Like Rodney Dangerfield said in "Caddyshack": "Cemeteries and golf courses are the biggest waste of prime real estate there is"
I don't think they need to waste a perfectly good piece of land that could be used for something useful, just to show where the box is that holds my rotting corpse.
If people feel the need to remember me...hang a freaking painting of my mug on the wall.
Just be sure to sprinkle my ashes in the locker room of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. :)

Here they do. You can donate all the organs and the limbs go to a lab for training in orthoscopic surgery, the head goes to med school for plastic surgeons, etc.
Shame to waste it all after they have harvested the organs. Are you sure??
Asguard
10-10-08, 08:15 PM
i will have to check again but i belive they only take either full bodies OR organs for transplantation
After all most donated bodies either go to the forensic science students to be dumped to show them how to determine how long it takes a body to get to a specific point of decomp or medical students for anat training

Hell's Bells, man - half the reason I became a full body donor was the one-in-a-million chance that goofy "B" movie plot about transplanted bits "possessing" the person who got 'em might be possible.
I can just picture the surreal moment when a couple dozen or so people all get this kooky look in their eyes and start chanting like some weird parody of the end of the Styx tune Mr. Roboto...

I am a full body donor, not just an organ donor.
I could donate my children's organs, but I don't think I could donate their bodies. I know pediatric surgeons need children's bodies to perfect their skills, but I just can't do it.

I only signed over to allow my organs and tissue to be used in transplants that's it.
Are you ok with knowing this is where your body may end up? Are there any of the following you would not want your body used for?
Bodies may be split up, with the head sent to students learning brain surgery or nose jobs while the legs are packed off to students learning knee surgery.
Researchers in criminal forensics expose cadavers to various environments and observe how they rot.
Cadaver research in automobile crash tests contributed to the development and testing of such devices as lap-shoulder belts, air bags, dashboard padding, and safer windshields. Most current crash-testing uses dummies, but some experts question whether the dummies accurately reproduce the damage done to a real human head, for instance.
Corpses are used to test military equipment such as body armor. Testing footwear designed to protect against land mines has been controversial--apparently some people are offended that a body donated to science would be blown up rather than patiently sliced into tiny pieces.
Medical-instrument firms find corpses helpful for instructing doctors in the use of new devices or procedures; the training process involves learning from mistakes, which works out better when the subject is already dead. Artificial joints are often tested on cadavers; meanwhile, pharmaceutical companies pick up the odd gland for hormone extraction.

Well, no... if you're dead, you can't object, can you??
But I know what you mean. The only caveat I'd place on the use of my remains is that a fee be charged for their use in commercial enterprise, and that royalties be paid if they are used in research that later generates income.

I believe that donating your body isn't bad at all. I mean what is your dead body going to do anyway?
I want to be buried in the earth with no chemicals/preservatives. I want my body to decompose into the earth and continue the circle of life. We all come from the earth and should die into it as to help make up other life. Life after death if you will.

I am not sure what should be done to my body when I die. I know for sure I want nothing expensive, nothing that would burden anyone unnecessarily. I want whatever is easiest, but I wonder whether donating my body would be worth it. I want whatever happens to my body to be up to someone else, so I guess I'll recommend it to them.

I sign up to be an organ donor everytime I renew my license. My living will also specifies that they can keep me alive as long as it takes to donate as many organs as possible to help as many people as possible. My body is just that, a body. It's a healthy one too, so let them take what they can, I'll try not to miss it.
