The spread of matter throughout space follows a pattern laid out at the beginning of time and scaled up to incredible proportions by nearly 14 billion years of cosmic expansion. Today that pattern is gradually being decoded by analysing maps of the distribution of the stars, and what has been uncovered could shake modern cosmology to its foundations. "

I've come to the conclusion that the universe is a fractal several times, though never with any tangible evidence. Its just that this fractal is many many times more complex than the simple ones we are used to.
