Why would I? Dear Mr. Simpson: It is with regret that I must reject your bid for the American presidency. Please understand, I consider you uniquely qualified for the office. Truly, you have shown yourself among the nation's most excellent hucksters, and your acting career amply testifies to the professionalism of your whoring. Your assembled defense team at trial certainly speaks well of your ability to choose good advisers and administrators. And I certainly do think that ethnic politics are still powerful enough in the United States that we Americans could certainly benefit from a strong, passionate nonwhite president who is willing to do anything--anything--to hold a Union together. However, these are difficult times emotionally for the American people. They are caught amid a very sensitive and even painful developmental phase. Our prior president, Bill Clinton, has survived a sustained campaign against his character that includes accusations of serial or mass murder of political opponents. Our current president, George W. Bush, actually is taking part in a mass murder campaign. Admittedly, your toll of two seems paltry next to the forty-seven (or however many it's up to) murders allegedly committed for the benefit or at the orders of Bill Clinton, and even forgettable compared to the suffering inflicted by the Iraqi Bush War. And that is the important thing: whether rumored, real, or acquitted despite reality, Americans need a president who has nothing to do with murder. I'm just saying it would be nice for a change. Sixteen years of this shite, and that doesn't even begin to account for the former CIA boss who paid off strongmen and butchers before battling some of them from the Oval Office; nor the brinkmanship that came before that, including proxy wars, financing human cruelty, and accommodating terrorists. That's twenty-six years of prominent and consistent association between murder and the presidency. With another two to go. After nearly thirty years, We, the People, need a break. And this is why I must necessarily reject the notion of your presidential campaign. To the other, though, I believe anyone should be able to have a shot at it, so please allow me to make the following recommendation for your potential campaign: Simpson in '08! (Elect me and I'll finally confess!) And then you can always pardon yourself. Before Congress impeaches you. See? Win-win. Good luck. Make America proud.
