seems to me like this is openly skipping work to interview for a new job....why arent americans up in arms about government officials neglecting their duties to campaign for new ones?

this kind of stuff pisses me off.
what would happen if a regular schmo tried to pull this bullshit?

You don't get it, do you????

If the congress votes to actually DO anything, then whatever happens because of it will be their fault! No politician wants anyone pointing fingers at them and saying, "Damn, why didn't you do ...(?)?"

See? If they do nothing, then they can't be blamed for anything! Surely you can understand that from a politician, can't you??

When have politicians been devoted to anything but getting themselves ahead? it's no surprise they get paid.

Did you know that Senators in jail for crimes still collect their regular paycheck?

You mean McCain? He doesn't want to vote for the resolution anyway. I can't help wondering if you even read that article.

I believe the constitution ought to be changed to include a mandate that:

No politician, on the state or federal level, ought to be able to run for another position or quit their position in order to run for another until their term is fully up. And if resigning for other reasons, must not run for another position until the term would have been up. Exemptions include only matters of order-of-succession issues and perhaps presidential cabinet appointments.

Ahh but the people who have to power to change it are the ones who don't want it changed.

It'll never happen. Wishful thinking though.

Indeed, a normal employee would be reprimanded for not doing his job.

I believe the system is that the senators ARE reprimanded for not attending a vote session. I think, though not sure, it's by the Ethics Committee. A little black mark is put beside the names or something like that.

Well well, a little black mark beside their name. That will hurt.

i would have had a hard choice not to vote for mccain in '08, but this seals the deal...ill most certainly be voting democrat now.

committment to duty is important to me.

    interestingly:

does campaigning for another position seem like a reasonable reason to be absent?

    The Devil Inside:

I had meant in general - not simply this vote.

Hopefully we'll be able to find some details on senate voting for the next few weeks to see whether Hilary and Obama are missing votes.
