does music still retain a sense of 'art' (terrible word) in general (widely perceived)

You're right, music right now is kinda stupid. On a more interesting note think of how much it's changed, my opinion is that our brains are evolving making new sounds seem more interesting.

in future...500 years from now...Eminem will be classical music, just like Bach and Mozart now-days.

Every generation hates the newer generations' music. E.g Rock and/or Roll.

Of course popular music--or the popularized form of any art--is still art. If it's crafted to appeal to patrons of less sophisticated background who will be giving it less prominent attention then obviously it will have to be a little simpler.

The explosion of electronic technology, coupled with a tremendous increase in leisure time, has turned all of the arts media into big business. It allows works of lesser talent, narrower appeal, shallower content, and less-than-universal references to find a market. That's just Econ 101A.

We got spoiled in the 1960s and 70s during the Great Intellectual Revolution that we thought was going to last forever. People actually sat and listened to music. Half the population could play a guitar. We could tap our feet in 11/4 time and catch obscure literary allusions. Then just about the same time fundamentalist Christianity came back into vogue, disco and punk hit the airwaves.

Oh well. There were still a few artists making real art back then. And there are still a few doing it today. King Crimson and Rush are still out there. I'll hold The Mars Volta up to them.

As for the steadfast pop artists, they occasionally turn out a masterpiece. Green Day, Shakira, Eminem, Paula Cole... there's one gem on almost every one of their CDs.

Yes, once you look beyond the media laden materials. Ther are lots of undeground club houses out there unless you live in a city with a population less than 500,000.

Which music? Name a band or a singer or a song and I'll tell you whether it's art or total shit.

I'm good at determining what's art and what's total shit.

I do have to warn you that most of the things you put forward for my expert consideration will probably turn out to be total shit.

if art is still art but an altered version to suit the shallower masses then can there there ever be a time in which art is allowed to progress even if it means becoming economically unviable?

    And art can be shit.

Music's primary function is to entertain, but no matter what type of music it is, it's an art to make it sound good and good is always subjective.
