Silicon has similar valency as the basis of our life, Carbon and thus has been suggested to be a possible candidate for a basis of extra-terrestrial life.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon#Silicon-based_life

The question is: what needs to be the environment to favor the silicon based life? temp and pressure-wise? Since silicon does not form double bonds or triple bonds as readily as carbon does...nor does it make long chains as poly-carbon molecules...what will favor the formation of these chains?

Why look for life? When we can seed one's ourselves.
