Does anyone know the answer to this one. If someone successfully creates a singularity in the lab, and looses it, would it drop the center of the earth and continue to eat matter? If so, how long would it take to consume all the earth, or would a hollow sphere form around it and save us?

    Thanks Matt 8)

More likely the singularity will need critical mass to continue - otherwise will dissipiate like the nuclear bomb reaction. There has to be enough mass and energy to create a chain reaction. That is why stray neutrons may not trigger atomic weapons and material stockpiles everywhere to explode - I think....

"Because the LHC (Large Hadron Collider, CERN) will cram vast amounts of energy into tiny volumes, this too should form black holes. These will be about a million times smaller than the nucleus of an atom and will survive for barely an instant."

Yep. The more diminuitive the singularity's mass, the more rapid its evaporation.

    Thanks

That covers my initial question. Anyone know the half-life/rate of evaporation of these things?

".....rate of evaporation of these things?"

    Around 10-27sec.
