Just wondered how many of you actually know any Muslims in person.

    And your opinion about them.

People are people Sam, muslims can't be lumped together under a sterotype.

Sometimes people coming from certain parts of the world will share a mind set, as they were raised with a particular set opf values, behaviours, cultural norms, traditions, morals etc. These can thus vary from culture to culture and cause some antagonism.

BUt when people are living side by side in a multi cultural society, the differences are less apparant as they adopt the same 'norms' of behavior.

Also, tolerance and pleasure from 'difference' should be encouraged early on so that people do not fear other cultures and the differences that may exist between them.

I know a Muslim pretty well IRL, my friend Khaled Nassar. His dad owns a gas station: USA Gas Mart and his brother owns a clothing store:Musa's Urban Styles. His living room is 5x+ bigger than my house. My opinion of him? He's rich, and it sounds really cool when he yells at his mom over the phone in Arabic. Also, he rolls blunts really bad. He's pretty cool, I doubt he's a very devout Muslim though, since he drinks and smokes and all, but he tells me that he is indeed a Muslim.

Do you think Muslims are above a little hypocrisy now and then?

You might be surprised how many devout Muslims break some rules they don't consider very important.

From what my ex told me. It's ok to break the rules as long as you lie about breaking them!

I visit kebab shop down the corner often. He is muslim I think. Not sure. His place is a bit dirty. He needs to clean more often.

We say hello. And then I tell him which kebab I want. And then I pay and say goodbye. He says goodbye too. He smiles. I smile.

    We have good personal relationship.

    My roommate's a Muslim. He's from Egypt.

There was a kid on my hall last year who would be the prince of some Middle Eastern country, but there was a coup and his grandpa got kicked out. He is also a Muslim.

Two Iranians. Came over before the revolution to attend university, and as America became their familiar surroundings they stayed after they graduated, just as I never went "home" from California. Married Americans, divorced, one has children and married again. Thoroughly secular, naturalized citizens, assimilated, acculturated, more American than my immigrant grandparents. They still identify themselves as Muslims the way most Americans identify themselves as Christians, but they don't keep up with the prayers and other rituals. If there were a "reform" branch of Islam like there is in Judaism that would be them. Unless you keep pushing to engage them in a religious argument, the impact of their religion on their daily lives is no greater--and no different--from that of their hundreds of millions of Christian fellow Americans. They feel an attachment to their homeland, were sad and alarmed during the hostage crisis. As much as they recognized the Shah as a puppet of the West they are opposed to the successor government and are newly alarmed over the prospect of Iran becoming a nuclear power. They have no hostility toward other religions and their members, including Judaism, and judge people on their individual merits, but they think the Israeli government bears a lot of responsibility for the problems that beset it.

In short, I get along with them as well as with most Christian Americans, and a good deal better than with some of them.

I had a few Muslim friends, but every time there was work to do, they excused themselves and went off to pray ...and I had to do all the work. Then they complained because I made more money than they did and got better promotions.

When I tried to explain it all to them, they got angry at me and claimed that I hated all Muslims. So they strapped on explosives and when off to blow up some women and little kids to teach me a lesson! But I didn't even know the women and children, so it didn't hurt me at all. ...LOL!

Yes - I travelled for a few months in Egypt and went to a small oasis visiting muslim people , whom I knew from earlier travels ...
One of them spend a lot of time trying to convert me into islam - he was very nice , saying that he wanted to meet me in paradise , and paradise would be more boring without me ....
However he did not succeed .........
Another guy , was a really good friend, we had a lot of fun together and I visited his family and talked both with the men and the women (a token of respect - normally strangers were not allowed to talk with the women ) -
    since I am stinking rich

I started buying up special cultural artifacts
    - and I decided to let my friend (whom I also knew from earlier travels)
buy them for me - he knew the language and got them at a bargain compared to the prices in the stores ..... He never cheated me - and for a while his whole family worked for me - because normally only women could talk to other women in that place - after he had helped me so much (and I asked him to help me - not the other way round (he never wanted money from me)) - I decided to give him a special present - I simply gave him enough money to buy a piece of land big enough to support a family -
he was a farmers son (the price 350 US $) - he was crying , when I gave it to him .........
I talked with him last year on the phone of the hotel I stayed at (he has no phone himself) - he wanted me to come and visit him - he wanted to show
how he was using his piece of land - he is now considering to marry a nice girl - since he has land enough to provide for a family ...
He has offered to me , that I can come and live with the family , when I get old - they will help me if I want ....
How many of your own friends has ever offered that ???

Most muslims I have met are actually nice people - only they are lost in religion, especially the fanatic ones - they deserve the freedom of secularism .....
