In the five years since September 11, the government has spent billions on anti-terrorism projects, instituted a color-coded alert system that has never been green, banned fingernail clippers and water bottles from airplanes, launched a pre-emptive war on false pretenses, and advised citizens to stock up on duct tape and plastic sheeting.

But despite the never-ending litany of warnings and endless stories of half-baked plots foiled, how likely are you, statistically speaking, to die from a terrorist attack?

With that in mind, here's a handy ranking of the various dangers confronting America, based on the number of mortalities in each category throughout the 11-year period spanning 1995 through 2005 (extrapolated from best available data).

Statistics are for the survivors, Sam ....for the victim, it was 100%!

Just immediately prior to being killed, the victims chance was just as slim as anyone else's chance ...but he was killed, wasn't he? Statistics are for the survivors.

The people screamed for it and expected it ...and our Constitution and Bill of Rights demand that we be protected from enemies foreign and domestic.

What would you have the goverment do, Sam? Nothing?

Personallly, I'd feel much better if they spent much less, and just kept all Muslims and Arab-looking people from flying or going into large public places or participating in any major public events, etc. Or, hmm, perhaps round them up and put them in detention faclities?

In a gazillion years, we only had one Timothy McVeigh, so don't use him as an excuse! Of course there are white mad-men, but they apparently don't fly planes into big buildings!

Remember ......statistics are only for the survivors!

(By the way, statistically speaking, we all have a 100% chance of dying!)

    Sam

    re thread post.

Your argument here seems to be that your government is spending more money on something less likely to happen than those 'higher risk' things that you list.

Yet you have not told us how much they spend on preventing those things that you list, so how can we decide if the 'spend' on anti terrorist attack is proportionately larger.

Or should we just assume it is?

Also regarding that 'spend' if it is larger, it can be justified thus.

The other matters listed can be prevented by US as individuals taking measures to protect ourselves, they are personally avoidable.

But terrorist attack is something that we cannot personally prevent, it will happen to us or not. Governemnts coming under threat have a duty to protect us from these things whereas they can inform us re the other matters via education they do not need to personally be there to hold our hands as we cross the road.

So the UN don't approve action in Iraq, but USUK use the excuse of enforcing UN sanctions to invade, whilst clearly showing disregard for the opinion of the UN. wtf?

What is legal about the action in Iraq? Invasion for the puposes of regime change is illegal, so toppling Saddam cannot be used as justification.

The UN is nothing but a bunch of old, useless men arguing and never agreeing, and worse, not having any power to enforce anything they say. They're useless and irrelevant!!!

No, you said it was, so I just thought I'd help you figure out what you should to do about it.

Yeah, it's far better to have a bunch of gun waving gung-ho assholes policing the planet as they see fit, killing 92,000 civilians in revenge for the loss of 3,000 of it's own citizens, trampling over human rights and inciting hate, and radicalising opposition.

btw, the UN did agree. It agreed to take no action against Iraq. The USA did not agree with the UN, and became a vigilante.

Until the UN can stop those same groups, then they're nothing but hot-air and bullshit and idealistic old farts with no power of enforcement.

The UN is totally irrelevant in the world today .....they can't and haven't stopped anything since it was created!!! Just lots and lots of hot air ...perhaps that's what caused the global warming?!

A fearful populace is a docile populace. It's fairly obvious to anyone but the most braindead how Republicans try to keep their approval ratings up.

It's called democracy, in countries other than the United States, (where a felon wins an election though dubious means), a majority means a decision has been reached. All members should then abide by that decision.
