Twin Keck Great stuff. Saw a programme on Channel 4 (UK) about the hunt for extrasolar planets last night. They were making adjustments to the twin Kecks combining power. Looks like it paid off. Though can we strictly call this body an extrasolar planet??
Deepuz Welcome to Sciforums! Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Given it's size, then if it has a regular close stellar orbit then it can really only be one of two things. It's either a planet or another stellar body.
I believe they think it is a brown dwarf. http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/gemini_keck_020107.html
Yeah, This is why I was questioning the extrasolar "planet" title of this thread. Brown Dwarfs are still a grey area as far as classification is concerned. Whatever the outcome of that debate, its an exciting topic in cutting-edge astronomy. Thanks for the welcome, I've been lurking for a while, having rediscovered the site since the exosci days.
Hi Porfiry, I made the same mistake when posting to SSSF forum. Looks like CNN hyped up the story of a brown dwarf into a planet. Here's the Keck link from those who discovered it. <A HREF="http://www2.keck.hawaii.edu:3636/realpublic/gen_info/kiosk/news/Browndwarf.html" target="_blank"><FONT COLOR=gold size=+1> brown dwarf discovered</FONT></A> <img src="http://www2.keck.hawaii.edu:3636/realpublic/gen_info/kiosk/news/Brownd3.jpg"> Here's an old discovery story. <A HREF="http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap011128.html" target="_blank"><FONT COLOR=blue size=+1> Extra-Solar Planetary Atmosphere Detected </FONT></A> <img src="http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/images/atmospheres/absorption_strip.jpg"> From Here. <A HREF="http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap011128.html" target="_blank"><FONT COLOR=gold size=+1> Extra-Solar Planetary Atmosphere </FONT></A>
Hi, Thanks very much for this comment. It help me to think about my ideals. Tks again and pls keep posting.
