    Hi everyone,

I was wondering...even if we manage to go for intergalactical travel and overcome emotional troubles, break speed barriers via anti-gravity and so,but communication would be still a big problem, lets say if we travel and we wanna send a message from a binar system 6 or 7 light years away one message will require 6-7 years to reach earth...when we think about light speed or greater travel we must also take into regard the speed of communication...

unless some vital breakthroughs are first made in the light speed barrier in communication first we"ll never know what the hell those darn people are doing on the other side of the universe, isnt it?

    bye!

If we have solved the FLT but not communication then it will leave us with the option of sending messenger missiles. Load your message, fire the missile, have it squirt the message within the arriving system. How soon the message gets there depends on how antsy the neighbors are. For who is to tell what is the messenger and what is the warhead?

So you'll have to save to pay for the important messages like,

Mother-in-law died party in 7 years!

    Why one message.
We could make smkind of a postal rocket.
Every year at the same time we send a mail rocket with partcels, letters different goods from all earth to tht system. then they send us it back with their messages.
And we also need to think of some kind identification signal.

    Avatar,
That was what was on my mind with the squirt business. Usually when you have a lot of signals or messages you save power, reduce transmission time, and reduce the capability of others to receive and understand the messages by making them directional and sending them fast. Of course any physical "parcels" would not be able to take advantage of this and would be horrendously expensive to send.

Assuming we had FTL, wouldn't it then make more sense to have 'postal centers' that split the difference between multiple colonies and served as communications hubs between those colonies?

Each hub would then just sit somewhere in space and receive messages from passing 'messenger birds' and then upload the appropriate messages to the birds heading in the appropriate direction.

The birds could be on a fixed message route, kind of like the spokes of a wheel, and there could be multiple birds on each route so there would always be one close to arriving or leaving towards a particular destination.
