The Sun had set in Guadalajara Mexico as I boarded my plane home. The smell of tequilla, wool and chilli followed me to row 23 where I sat down and fell asleep so it seems. I awoke to the sound of landing gear but this time the smell of waitresses and alcoholics prevailed; we were landing.
The plane doors soon opened and the passangers trotted off, complaining about the service as they moved along. We had landed in Houston international airport, also known as G.W Bush airport, previously known as Kennedy International Airport, And previosly to that known as Houston International Airport. It was night time and none of the usually bland desert landscape could be seen, only the specks of lamp-posts in the distant city broke the dark vail. I walked casually down the corridor with my laptop over my shoulder, and slowly made my way along to the Passport desks, "how are ya today" said the hefty man with a buzz-cut.
"not bad" I replied. After the better part of five minutes of typing he opened his large mouth again; "Thats not a mexican last name". "That might be because im russian" The man looked shocked. He picked up the phone and muttered somthing down to the other end. Soon four men arrived and escorted me to a mirrored room at the end of a series of passages and stairs.
Two hours I sat there reading, The process of which was interrupted by me looking at the Immaculately placed mirrors, and the halogenic light fixtures on the ceiling which seemed to emit an almost alien, ghostly glow.
Suddenly a man arrived in the room and sat down at the desk infront of me with a crackle as the leather chair adjusted to the sudden gain of weight.
" how are you today sir" He said as he continued to study my face.
"I'm just great, been sitting here for two hours, I'm going to miss my flight to London" I replied with my British accent
The mans facial expression turned into a Picasso painting as he tried to resemble what seemed to be shock.
"Jim you said he sounded middle-eastern!" he shouted at the mirror.
The mirror cracked and switched to see-through glass. On the other side of which stood the man from the Immigration desk, with a new stupified facial expression streched across his bulky head.
Without the slightest explination or a sorry, I was lead back down the corridors and stairs to the waiting lounge, where I was handed my laptop and my bording pass, The men then dissapeared into the shadows from whence they came.
Angry and Confused I bought some presents for back home in the duty free, and sat down at my gate.
    "Morons" I said to myself.

And the morale of the story is: Never fly on an airline or, if you do, don't ever land at an airport.

I've seen lots of the world, Spurious. But I was lucky, I saw a lot of it in the 60s and 70s when things were fairly nice all over the world. Now? I don't want to see any of it!!

Things are still nice in most places. Maybe that is why you need to go and see it now.

Don't trust your TV or news sources in these matters.

You say that like I should actually trust those sources for OTHER things. If so, what and when? And how am I to know?

I disagree ....there's much too much "individualism" in today's world. It's always an *I* want, *I* need, give *me* things, ...etc. And that's becoming more and more true all over the world.

Maybe, but this individualism is at its worst in the US, so maybe it is safe to leave the US???

Maybe go and live for a few months where things are entirely different?

No thanks! I'll live out my life right here in my comfortable cave, secure from all of those horrors of today's world inasmuch as possible. But I do feel sorry for the younger people who don't know, haven't been able to experience the closeness of a small-town social atmosphere.

Perhaps ignorance really is blissful. Maybe we really don't need to know that a tsunami hit Indonesia? Maybe we really don't need to know that an earthquake destroyed a Pakistani village? Maybe we really don't need to know that a hurricane destroyed New Orleans?

Perhaps we should all turn off the tv, stop reading the papers, and live life with those close around us ...and worrry about simpler things like, "S'pose old George will get his crops planted before the storms? Maybe we should help him out some, huh?"

    Ignorance could be bliss.

I kicked out the TV a long time ago. Stopped reading newspapers even a longer time ago.

I guess the only source of news is the internet, but I do not really search for news other than science news. Usually I hear things first from sciforums or from people.

What I will do is read history books. But that is on another level than current news, because there is room for a deeper analysis and there usually has been time to let the 'objective' truth distill through the propaganda shit. Sort of.

But in principle there is nothing wrong with spending your time in a stabel local society. Life could be better for everyone if everybody had this desire.

    or not...

    who knows.

it seems we pretty well live the same life style spurious.
i have a tv but i can't remember the last time it was on.
i have a radio but i use it to listen to country music
i get the paper but it is all local news.
although i do not subscribe to the conspiracy theory i do believe that some stories are planted.
as for living in america, i wouldn't live anywhere else even if they paid me.
