I don't get why everyones freaking out about the government listening in on our conversations. I mean do they care what we have to say?
"Oh no they might find out about my crush on johnny!" Who gives a crap?
There are better reasons to hate Bush, and this is a really crappy one.
Seriously, this is only for the best. He's not bored sitting up at the white house and wanting to pull a prank. I personally feel more protected with him doing so.
Or do you know some better why to help stop terrorism?

it is oversight everyone is concerned about
in my opinion the war on terrorism will never be won for the simple reason the term terrorist has yet to be defined.

I doubt very much (at this point) if the government is interested in me personally. I'm a white, upper middle-class professional American and thus probably not seen as a real threat. What concerns me as a citizen is the abuse of power this represents, and the enirely possible slide from investigating possible terrorist threats to other political and ideological spying. We had, or thought we had, some oversight provided by Congress and the FISA court. If there is no oversight whatsoever, what prevents the Executive branch from listening in on political rivals, or capturing business information on behalf of contributors? The wholesale invasion of privacy and the potential betrayal of traditional governmental confidence could have ramifications far, far beyond the simple consideration of the individual.

Blackmail? They can get recordings of you that would embarrass you. Maybe you are talking to the girlfriend. They threaten to let your wife hear it. Mabye your kid is dealing drugs. They threaten to give the recordings to the police. Maybe your wife has a sexual disease she didn't tell you about. They threaten to let you listen to the recording.

People do stupid things every day. It is easy to find something that a person could hold up and get other people to laugh at. A recording of you singing in the bathroom they play to your coworkers. They laugh so much that you lose all respect, and the promotion to supervisor that demanded they respect you.

Hmm, perhaps they shouldn't! But are you saying that people should not be responsible for what they say or type or do?

    Blackmail us? To gain what???

Well, dealing drugs is a crime, ain't it? And ya' know something? ..it's also a crime to know of another crime and not report it to the authorties!

Well, perhaps one shouldn't do things like that where people can laugh at you and lose respect for you?

Geez, maybe this "listening in" deal isn't so bad after all ....I mean, if it'll get people to be more responsible for what they say, type and do, then that'll be a damned good thing, huh? Maybe the NSA should listen MORE, not less!

Mainly, what Bush has done is a flagrant violation of Right of Privacy. He could have gotten retroactive warrants if he had wanted to after tapping the lines, but he didnt even bother to do that, and so he absolutley trampled that Bill of Rights.

Perhaps the best way to recover our stolen privacy is for everyone in every Email, forum posts, etc. to include the words: bomb & NYC & holly war & nuclear & poison gas & radiological bomb & etc.

NSA's computers are the best, but even they have limited capacity. If you know how to do this in Arabic, all the better.

It's a breach of our contitutional right to privacy. Now that they are doing this, they can have anyone who speaks dissent assassinated. 'Tis the manner of governments. The only think that stops them is our laws, and now the government is simply pushing those laws out of the way.
Sounds an awful lot like the RSF event in 1933.

I'm sure that President Bush is very interested in listening to your nightly phonesex conversations.
I'm just wondering, how many minutes of important conversation do you have on the phone or over e-mail weekly versus how many minutes of drivel?

I am picturing some CIA guy trying to monitor emails getting 50 million offers for blackmarket viagra.

It's their over-inflated ego, Clockwood. People love thinking that they're somehow very important and very intelligent, and that the government is somehow very scared of their "importance and intellect". ...LOL!!

There have been 8 gutless posts in the 15 minutes since I made mine - but not one had the guts to include a few words like "bomb." etc. It is obvious that civil liberties, free speach, etc are vanishing.

That's just silly. I'm sure they don't care who your sleeping with or who your not sleeping with. If they do use it as blackmail they'd have to admit what they've done. They're breaking the law, of course. And there not going to rat you out to your wife that your having phone sex, cheating on them etc.., when they could be in deep shit for it.
it's not a big deal. If they were putting cameras in our house....well that's a different story.

I don't understand people. Bush lied about the intelligence for the Iraq war. The history books will say that is the biggest lie of the 20th century.

But you still have people going on about law and order and honesty and truth. We are talking about politicians and the government here. Not sunday school class.
