Has anyone heard of the planet Vulcan? Supposedly the first planet from the sun. Originally thought to be the reason for Mercury's irregular orbit and fitting into the cause for such irregularity it was looked for during the solar eclipse of 3/22/1877 after an amature observer claimed to have seen it. If you are curious, here is a link that will explain in a little more detail. http://members.tripod.com/Tony_Sakalauskas/index-2.html
Rumor has it that Charles Goodyear was abducted by Vulcans and then released. Since then sulphur and rubber have ruled the world. Conspiracy?
There are no pictures and it is questionable that it even exists. If it does, it lays to close to the sun to obtain any photos. There have only been 3 people to claim seeing it as a dark disk against the sun. These could have been either hoaxes or mistaken sightings. There is no evidence other than these reported sightings to say that it is even there. I ran across this and thought it might make some interesting posting if there actually was a planet there.
If memory serves, one of the points about relativity that convinced doubters at the time was that it explained Mercury's wacky orbit. And isn't vulcan orbiting Epsilon Eridani? Waay to far away to perturb Mercury.
Lescarbault claimed the right of a discoverer to name his discovery. He named it Vulcan. Not the same as the Epsilon Eridani planet.
