Is the government that incompetent? My friend wanted to do some import/export. Their Washington embassy (a minister) said, they only do visa stuff, for any business activities, you are on your own, but if you have money, we will take it.
No not at all just a typical weak 3rd world nation . Because the Tanzanian goverment like other 3rd World goverments dont want 1st World businessmen getting a foothold in theuir countries . The West is able to take full advantage over unsophisticated local industries so they discourage business ventures in order to help local busines .
Even if one want to buy their products? Or help teach them what is the demand here so that they can export goods or services! How does that help local business if their government discourages importers? My friend is an active African American. He thought he can help his roots. But after what happened there, he is disillusioned and depressed.
Because it helps local business's survive an onslaught by more wealthy and sophisticated western business interests . Western business would simply under cut Tanzanian business and when those local businesses have been driven into the ground those Westrn firms would push prices up . The ensuing mess would mean money Tanzanians would of spent on their local economy would now leave Tanzania for the West . Ask yourself if Tanzania was to open its market to unfettered market access to Westrn firms would that be reciprocal meaning would Tanzanian firms have equal access to Westrn markets ? I think not it is a one sided game .
One of the rules with unfettered access to the western market is that the poor country lose. Almost anything that could be produced more cheaply in a third world country is either protected and dumped- as with many agricultural products- or else production is encouraged to grow to a point where the price crashes, as happened with coffee. About the only agricultural products that are economically worth producing and investing in in poor countries are illegal drugs.
