Intelligent design is by definition not a scientific theory because it is not subject to testing that would be capable of disproving it. To qualify as a theory you must have tested a hypothesis (an explanation for an observation) with an experiment that was capable of disproving the hypothesis. Without failing to disprove your hypothesis, you cannot have a theory. Since there is no way to disprove that God did it, intelligent design does not qualify as a theory.

I guess it comes under the Freedom of Disinformation Act.

Thus did they plant and nourish their nemesis, so that in twenty generations they were no more. Their kin were no more. Their seed was gone from the Earth, unto the ending of time.

Agreed. I believe intelligent design is more of a theological proposition.

Yet it seems to be gaining ground in the usual public manner, the ID institute has gone for a deliberate strategy to target schools and the public, avoiding anything to do with actual scientists. At the moment they appear to be stalled by various court actions, but meanwhile their publicity bandwagon rolls on.
I'm wondering if we'll see any of it in the UK, since I am now well read up on it and have an idea of how to argue with its proponents.

Unlikely to take hold, except in niche markets :
    1. We are a godless lot compared to Americans.
    2. We are a cynical lot compared to Americans.
    3. We are an intelligent lot compared to Americans.*

*May not be true, but should generate a response from Enraged of Kennebunkport, Maine.

Here's a relative cartoon found on David Thomas' site: nmsr.org.

Intelligent design isn't a theory, its simply creation in a new wrapper.
