Have anyone else noted how slow sciforums is nowdays? Or is it "my" computer?
What about that database problem that keeps poping up almost everyday!?
Maybe it would be a good idea to create another completely different site, in another completely different server just for archiving messages that are more than one year old? Than, with less messages in this server we could have a much better chance to not run into slow sciforums and database problems.
What da ya think?

well if someone with a permanent broadband connection has a few gig free on their computer then go ahead

And as soon as that persons hard drive crashes, we're all fucked. Plus he/she would loose bandwidth... a lot of bandwidth.

What if we use all our hard drives!
Well, ok... maybe not. :D
1) How much would it be anyways? Aren't there sites that store information from hard drives? Like... backup sites (http://www.ibackup.com/)!
2) Besides, we could raise the money by donation instead of paying a fee. Like simtropolis (http://www.simtropolis.com/) has been doing for quite some time! ;)

3) We could also use gmail accounts. :)
Some of us still have some. I have about 4 of them that I could give to sciforums!

It requires a little bit of programming tough. We could ask help for the computer science folks!

but the bandwidth on those sites which offer free storage is often very low, but if we can all chip in a bit, or we can get some good advertising funds, then im sure we gould pay for another connction, and use someones spare computer
Combine

Yeah ill be able to chip in a bit

I'd pay some money for it. I would request a short signature and a bigger avatar in return though :)

Sure, I would pay some for it, if the need arises.

I, unfortunately, wouldn't be able to donate any money (I'm poor! :(), but I really like this idea.

I mentioned something previously to Porfiry many years back, simply I suggested when he was in a rut about keep this forum up and running to get the archive and put it onto CD (generate an ISO), and basically allow people to donate a little to contribute to Sciforums.com running in exchange for a copy of the whole archived DB.
However as you can tell that didn't happen, I guess the reason ws probably due to potential legal technicalities like people complaining about donating to get access to a copy of the DB thats got all the discussions they've had over their time at Sciforums.com

SciF is really slow. Somethings are really bad like clicking 'preview' or 'save changes', when to actually post it's quite quick. I try to sneak in when the US is alseep, but I supose the American pop here is nocternal.
Anyway, I'm drifting, you can have £15 or equiv once a plan's been made and people support it.

Well... I guess we have to wait until the pool closes on December 30th before we can make plans for all that...
