    Simple fractions in Word

How to write a simple (vulgar) fraction in Word?
That is, I need to type the fraction with the horizontal line.

    Please. Thanks.

    It doesn't work!

I did this, as that article says:

    1. Place the insertion point where you want the fraction to appear.
    2. Press Ctrl+F9 to insert field braces.
    3. Between the field braces, type the following:
    EQ \F(a,b)

where a and b are the numerator and denominator of the fraction. For example, if you want to create the fraction 1/16, the field would look like this:

    { EQ \F(1,16) }

    4. With the insertion point in the field, press Shift+F9. This gives the following result:
    [horizontal fraction]

and up to including step 3 it all works, but when pressing Shift+F9, the whole thing disappears!

But if I press Ctrl+F9 again, new braces appear, plus the previous ones.

    What is wrong?

I searched the help file, but it doesn't say anything about how to make fractions.

when you press ctrl + F9 you ge the braces
then you type in your thing replacing the a and b with actual numbers.
then right click inside the field and choose "Toggle Field Codes" from the menu - job done

    It.does.not.work.

The whole thing disappears once more, like before with shift+f9.

Maybe the problem is in the spaces: I typed thus: {EQ_\F_(1,2)}, but I tried other combinations too -- still, it doesn't work!
(That is: I didn't type the _ into the braces, I just typed them here to show where I left a space.)

There must be some other trick. How can it be that the braces do appear, but then don't work?

    Figured it out.

You need a space between EQ and \F(1,2). Nowhere else.

Something else must be the matter.

Is there something else for which I would have to use those braces, something else I could do with them -- so as to test if they work for other purposes?

I have always used the field editor in word and excel's formula wizard or whatever it is because I cannot remember all the different formatting.

It should be under insert/field and then you pick eq in the list on the left and then I click on field codes and you have all the switches right there and it makes the forumula and explains what each switch does. Its nice. I have tried to do them raw typing them in and it always pisses me off.

I use Office2003 so I hope it's the same in other ver. of word... I don't remember them much....I have been spoiled.

Now we're talking! It works! I did via menus, as said in C20's link.

The thing is that I have a version of Word in my native language, and isntead of EQ, it has to be EN. Go figure.

    Thanks.
