There should be a defragmenting feature built-in. Open up "My Computer". Right-click on the C drive. Go to "Properties" at the bottom of the menu. Click on the "Tools" tab. There should be a disk defragmentation option, and I think ya'll know where to go from there.

He is correct but you should also set up the error checking to check everything when the PC starts up again. Just restart your PC when you OK that error check and it will clean up any lost files or other loose stuff that defrag didn't do. Do the defrag first then the error check.

I found my system worked better when I used the Windows defrag and I don't like putting stuff into my PC that might cause it to malfunction. I used another defrag once with my old OS Win 98 and I had to find stuff that it hid away from me to free up disk space! I really don't think that much can be gained by just defraging but error check and checking for bad sectors will help keep the OS in pretty good running order.

To gain real speed get more RAM a better motherboard with at least 800 MHZ front side bus and a 3.0 processor.

Is there a defrag utility for Linux?
As I understand I don't need it for native Linux partitions because Linux manages data differently, but I have 3 mounted FAT partitions and I suspect that they need defragmentation.

    p.s. I don't have dual boot windows

Use Perfect Disk >> It is by far the fastest of the bunch

If you want the most thorough job (but slowest), try System Mechanic 5. They use 'caterpillar technology' and do a wonderful job on the files.

But Perfect Disk is marvelous simply.

Do you disable everything on your desktop and startup when you defrag?
If there is any programs that are running when you defrag they will really slow down the system.
