    Hello again.

In case you remember me, don't be panic first. I do have a problem in computering, but not about my crazy PC again (it's acting docile lately...)

Recently, it often happens to me that when I try to access a certain website (www.planet-megaman.com and its sub-sites, in fact, this is the ONLY ONE site which gets the problem), occasionally this error message appear instead:

    Gateway Timeout
    The following error occurred:

    Code:
A DNS lookup error occurred because the request timed out during the lookup.
    Please contact the administrator.

Now who's fault is this? My ISP (in this case it may be my school) or someone else? I'm not sure if it's the site's problem, considering the forum members (yes, there's a forum in the site) doesn't seem to get the problem.... but who knows, I'll ask them when the site's up again.

Any answers are appreciated, thank you.

It's not a site problem, because I can access the website without any error. (IE, netscape, firefox)

Most likely it also isn't an ISP problem. Are you trying to access the website via school computers? Because your school probably has it's own DNS server and it could be imporperly configured or certain websites are blocked.

If your school is the ISP and the problem is with your computer home why don't you try accessing the website at someone else with the same ISP and see if the problem still occurs. If it does, it's a problem with the ISP (in this case your school) and if not, it's probably a problem with your own computer or router if you use one.

s0meguy, this is another fact: I've tried to access it via my friend's and I still can't access it... so it's not from my PC based on your explanation, correct? And yes, my school does block some mature-related websites, which makes this even more ridiculous...

Then it's a problem with your isp.

If your school blocks mature websites, your school probably uses a filter. It might be the case that the filter tries to block this website but it somehow identifies it as a mature website? Or maybe your school doesn't want you accessing gamesites but only use the connection for educational purposes?

It isn't that hard to bypass this kind of filters. You just need another proxy. To get this it may be handy to have friends @ your school's computer maintenaince department. I use my schools exam proxy. It's an alternative proxy that is used for computers that are used for exams and it's superfast (something like 48 Mbit) and doesn't have a filter.

The first option seems to be the better guess..... I'm a member of two gameing forums, and I've never had this kind of problem when accessing the other one (Castlevania), though the site is occasionally down anyway (their host, fileplanet, often apologize because of this)... besides, a lot of gaming sites are accessible, ranging from fansites to flash game sites....

I'll see if I can find a friend who's perfect at this. Thank you very much

When you transverse the internet, your computer sends out Identifying packets so that the system it communicates to at the other end knows where to "conversate" back with.

This is the nature of a computerised dialogue, however the further you get away from the computer your attempting to contact (like the opposite side of the world for instance) the more "bounces" your packet has to do to reach its destination.

A "bounce" in this instance is when your packet is handled via systems that are working as a "Proxy" for you, that take your packet and pass it on. It's like a large instance of Polymorphic whispers, where your packet attempts to define where you are addressed, however the more computers it goes through the more information is added to the packet, like the address of the machine that took the bounce.

If you have 20 bounces or hops, then the machine you are comunicating to doesn't send it's reply straight back to you, it has to "bounce" back. This causes an overall delay between your computer and the one your attempting to communicate with. It's usually refered to as "Latency" and if your "Latency" is to great then a system can be told to "Drop the packet", when a packet drops it means that the computer will not honour your request because Latency is too great so you end up with a Gateway Timeout.

This can happen at either end, your machine could cause it or their server.

Sometimes Latency can be caused by the systems that make up your "Route" (The number of machines that bounce for you). If those machines are busy with network traffic, it can cause slowdown, which means they don't always honour their requests (and bounces) in time, again causing the Timeout.

What you can attempt to do is construct your own route to the machine you want to communicate with, that would lower the number of machines you have to bounce through to get your communication across.

You could first "Ping" the machine you want to connect to, or even use a "Traceroute" program. Both of these might get the systems that deal with the bounces/hops to take note of your requests. (In fact in multiplayer games, "pings" occur most of the time with the game server just to make sure the server knows you are there and need your requests dealt with, if your pings drop then you are usually kicked to the lobby.)

Much gratitude to you, stryder, for your information. So, by your info, is it normal then that the regular traffic just randomly chose which path to send the package to? Because that site I cannot access right now used to be accessible, that is, until the day before yesterday, and it's quite often too that it happens (normal, timeout for a few days, normal again etc)....

the route that your ip data takes to the server is determined by fairly advanced pathfinding protocols...the main DNS servers resolve the domainname you type in to a machine IP address, and then the best possible path from your machine to the host IP address is determined.

As for the porn filter preventing you from finding this website; does the pron filter give you an error message when it blocks a site "You cannot access this site because it is naughty!", or does the site time out as this one is doing?

about the blocking riverwind, actually, some porn sites are blocked with forbidden mesage..... (so, did I lead you astray? Sorry if so)

I just decided that I've had enough and sent a complaint to my school (ISP), and today I can access the site again.... problem is, as usual they never bother why errors occur....
