Windows critical updates problem

<font color="blue">I have been having a problem that I have posted on the above forum. I am curious if anyone else has had similar problems????

<i>ps. Is anyone else here at sciforums a member at "Tech support guy"?</i> It's been a pretty damn good site to get help at if you are having computer woes.

Windows Update = PROBLEM!
I recently DLed the critical update package which promised better everything. Instead,Outlook Express won't start up and my IE freezes at random. I unistalled IE, Outlook, and reinstalled them both again without prevail. I DLed the new IE 6 with Outlook 6 but the problem is still there.


This could all be fixed if I could find a way to somehow "undo" what the update "did". I seriously do not want to format my PC.
I called earthlink tech support but they are retarded.

First remove IE and go back to your previous version. IE did not install correctly. Go to control panel, add/remove programs, click on IE Explorer and tools, click the remove button.

A new menu will appear asking you for a choice. Chose remove and install previous version, (something like that), chose that one and remove it.

Next reboot and after it starts go to the following site and clean the hard drive. After you clean the hard drive, also go into mscofig and remove all programs from the start up tab that aren't needed also listed on the same web page, reboot, defrag and then update windows and I think it will install for you this time.

Nope, no dice. It seems to be a windows problem.
OE still takes 5 minutes to start an IE is still slow/crashy.

I even tried reinstalling windows 98SE without success. The stupid patches from microsoft are forever imbedded in my PC.

So what I'm saying, I don't think it has much to do with IE as windows itself. I had this problem before I formatted as well. I think it's best to erase everything and spend half a day having everything working normally again but that would defeat the purpose of this forum.

Here's exactly what I did after formatting (in order):

-Installed Win98SE
-Installed my PCI video card
-Installed my modem
-Changed the wallpaper or something
-Went online an setup my OE account
-downloaded the latest patch from microsoft
-Installed latest patch and restarted
-BAM! Problem begins!

I've got the same problem.
About a week (or so) ago, I found that Microsoft had the Internet Explorer 6.0 beta. So I downloaded it (going from IE 5.5). Then I decided to download the critical Updates package also.

The only unusual thing that happened when I downloaded "critical updates" was that at the end of the download, it didn't install. So I went back to the microsoft page & found that there was (1) one critical update that didn't get downloaded. This seemed odd, as I was pretty sure that it should have been.

So I checked the box next to the one critical update that didn't download and proceeded to download it. This only took about a minute or so and at the end, I got the message to restart windows. When I clicked on "yes-restart", my computer signed of of the net, but did not re-start. So I selected to restart manually and went back to the new IE 6.0, with the "critical updates". THAT WHEN THE PROBLEMS BEGAN AND HAVE BEEN VERY SIMILAR TO 8 bit Orgy's.


I am curious as to whether 8 bit Orgy downloaded these things at about the same time as I did?

I don't use Hotmail or Outlook Express, so I may not have this problem. My symptoms are:

- IE 6.0 takes twice as long to load up a page now (compared to my previous IE 5.5). Note: Before I ever decide to sign on to the net, I first restart my computer. I always do this first. After I surf less than a dozen pages or so, IE 6.0 gets so slow at loading new pages that I get the time expiration/ unable to contact server message???? I have tried to refresh the pages, and have tried loading up pages that usually load very quickly, but with the same result.

Actually, I am signed up with AOL and have AOL 6.0, but I use Internet Explorer because it is simply better at handling tasks than the AOL Browser. Could this create any particular problems?

I can still use my AOL Browser 6.0, and have no problems aside from the fact that AOL doesn't have the same capabilities as IE.

As I have already stated, before I upgraded from IE 5.5 to IE 6.0, everything seemed to work well. In fact I didn't seem to have any problems until I downloaded those CRITICAL UPDATES! NOW MY COMPUTER IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION!

Another thing that I have noticed is that after I upgraded to MSN Internet Explorer 6.0, there didn't seem to be any change in the look of it that I could notice?????

What I have learnt from the critical updates is that a few thing occured with the different machines that I have loaded and upgrade. From which I drew a few conclusions:

I found that some critical upgrades wouldn't load into my system, this I found out later is because particular parts to Internet Explorer's package I hadn't loaded previously, once they were loaded I was able to load that particular update.

Internet explorer, I did find errored on occasion so badly that somehow it corrupted, I found that if you use the Add/Remove program in your control panel and click Internet Explorer #.# and components, that there is an option for Repairing internet explorer. This has proved to be valuable (but it does require you to keep the downloaded files from you install internet explorer)
There are possibilities also that if during your download one of the modules of internet explorer suffers a CRC error, that module will have to be deleted and downloaded again.

I also noted a problem with the critical updates security, this one could be percieved itself as a security risk. I recommend you ping microsofts server before you try to download critical updates, so you know what nodes the information is passing through.

You see if a hacker is cunning enough to place a packet listening program on one of the nodes that you connect through he can listen for the IP address of the critical updates, and see when someone like you is trying to download an update or patch.

This means that the hacker finds out a):You system is insecure for an update and b): if hes quick to move he can sabotage your download and make sure you can't patch a security hole that he could quite easily use to his advantage.

I hope this will aid your problem in certain respects, I know that you might have to re-install your Internet explorer though (before the updates)
