I only started noticing this lately. Usually when I log onto sciforums, there is about 200-300 people online. Only about 10% of these people are members. I clicked on the sctive members link and the "guests" are viewing all different threads. Why are there so many unregistered people viewing this site without anything to say? Are the watching us? Strange. Here si the members when I logged on "238 (33 members and 205 guests)" this is weird.

Most of these guests are search engine spiders. Google has this site indexed pretty well and there is a reason for that.
mmm....spiders....
Also, lurkers are everywhere....leeching off the glorious intellectuality that goes on here :)

Many of the google spiders appear to be in the 'photos of soldiers raping iraqi women' thread.
I wonder what they were searching for
I'd say porn. We all know the internet exists solely to propagate porn and spyware :)
why register if you have nothing to say or a need to say anything

Yeah, I suppose Kunax is right.
Hey, I just looked who is online and saw a google-spider register.
Porfire can turn the bots away if he whised to do so, ofcause then the only way to find this site will be true links and from other users.

Google brings a lot of new visitors to the site, so it's not in our interest to block spiders. Plus, the spiders are needed to generate the targetted ads at the top that are absolutely essential for funding the site.
Indeed, that was why i said "if he wishes", i had forgot the banner thou :).

I never said that the "spiders" were bad, I was just wondering how so many people get on the site and don't register. You answered my question. Usually google doesn't link to forums until you get really far down the list, I guess sciforums is onr of the first posted.

Hey, sometimes I'm too lazy to log in. Maybe others do the same.

Perhaps the spiders should have to register instead of gaining information without having registered.

the reason we have a web is for information hence spiders search for it.
somebody looking over you shoulder is aggrovating but we have to accepted it.
