I just dropped by to see anything new...

ON AI check out http://www.alicebot.org/ and let us know what you think.

Now that Alpha chip is sold to Intel, do you think it will survive?

    Interesting link.

As for Alpha: I doubt it will be around much longer (3 years maybe). But Intel has not just bought the chip technology it has accepted the Alpha chip designers from Compaq as new Intel employees. What Intel has bought is a very bright group of exceptionally talented chip designers. I'm sure they will add considerable value to future Intel chips.

One thing I have learnt this week, that might be general knowledge, but it surprised me, is that Intel have a 50 year roadmap for ongoing chip development. That is stagerring.

What you will now start to see instead of the Alpha chips will be the Intel Itanium chips.

Itanium is set to compete against Sun sparc and the like. In the meantime, AMD is coming out with the Hammer series on the x86 platform at 64bit for SOHO users and the rest of the world - which will be cheaper. I expect in 2002, most of the people will be buying AMD with XP (at 32-bit). If someone comes out with an integrated OS at 64 bit - it can replace XP.

That someone could be SuSe that is ready to port Linux to Hammer. It will be interesting to see if a decent GUI package wrapper on Linux is developed for common use. Personally, I would like to see a new OS with a simple english like rule based plugin that we could use to program our computers with. For example: everytime my Excel boots up, it wants to connect to the Internet. I should be able to tell the program that I will not be doing anything in the Internet so please do not take off on the on-ramp. I will be local - moving in town only.

Same for DoS attacks. If I could setup my OS to warn me for any unauthorized communication or specifically port scans or continuous pings to a stranger's computer, I want to know about it. That will go a long way towards the AI program. I should not have a degree in Comp Science to tell the computer "Mr. Computer, please do not talk to strangers".

    May be someday.....

Does anyone have an excerpt to that book? say a chapter or two?

Here is another book worth reading: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0140282025/ref=sim_books/103-4334221-0828663

The complaints I get from my friends is that: with comments from biologists or mathematicians on AI is that they think they are the guardian of Mankind and hence the result is a skewed perspective on things no matter how noble.

Sometimes it helps to create a balanced view and at other times it polarises people on an emotional and pseudo science. Like the Nuclear Energy or Fossil power plants and the society suffers like the state of California!
