Hubble Space Telescope took this picture of the Mz3 planetary nebula also known as the Ant Nebula. The picture was taken by mistake. But it was decided to go ahead with the shot anyway. The time for the shot was split with another astronomer. The two shots were combined to make the photo.
It is speculated that magnetic fields may be responsible for the shape of the dust clouds. That irregularity in the fields creates the unusual structures such as the one in the photograph. The nebula is illuminated in the last gasps of a stars stellar life cycle which light the dust clouds.
