It shows us what you like to think about, it shows your inner self.

I am not illustrating anything about animal cruelty. I simply did a google search for 'dead corpse'. I was wondering how people react to death and mutilation in general, since reactions to death always perk my interest. I was looking for more comments from the theological and naturalist crowd.

    Is that a dog?

    (My reaction)

I thought it would be a human too.

My first reaction was, "Is there such thing as a live corpse?"

Then I looked at the picture (of a dog?) and thought, "What kind of reaction is this person trying to illicit?

    "

    That was MY reaction

*Redoubtable thinks to himself: "Oh, it must be discussion on the status corporis morte . . ." *

*Redoubtable clicks on thread and sees picture*

*Redoubtable thinks: "A dead dog? Oh, he wants to know what I think of animal-abuse or something."*

*Redoubtable replies, making certain to mention himself as frequently as possible*

    [edit]

    *Redoubtable thinks: "That is a redundant thread-title . . ."*

*Redoubtable thinks: "Come on, One raven, you've got to know how to spell elicit."*

*Redoubtable thinks: "Hey, you, quit reading my thoughts you damned interloper!"*

If you really want a picture of human corpses, you put "bodies" into Google's Image search, and it will give you all kinds of war and massacre and Holocaust pictures.

But what's the point? If you just want to gauge people's reaction to seeing a dead body, you'd have to have a more up-close and personal venue than the Internet. Here on this message board, we had ample time to consider our response and to compose a reply (if any). So the responses you got were not the first ones, and don't mean much.

You'll notice that merely posting a picture of a dead weird-looking animal elicited mostly smartass answers, and those only from the people who felt like responding.

Not a very scientific sampling, IOW.

And IMO you're not very likely to get a serious theological "take" on it in a place called "Sciforums/Science/Human Science".

Point taken. It was a poor experiment.

I did find some common threads however:

    1. The word 'corpse' is usually associated with a dead human, not an animal, in people's minds.

    2. Most seem to enjoy the deaths of humans rather than animals.

    3. Dogs are considered innocent, while humans are considered evil.

    Interesting.

    I disagree.
My immediate response was exactly what I said it was.
If it sounded like a smart-ass comment to you (not sure if I was included in who you thought was being a smart-ass, but if I was) then perhaps I AM a smart-ass in your perception.
I would have has the same reaction in person.

Why would anyone not share what their "first"response was?
Do you think that people sat here considering what terribly witty thing they could say rather than what they initially thought?
Why would you think people would be more likely to be honest about their "first" response in person?

Also, I think you would have just as many smart-ass reactions in person (questioning people in the mall, for example) as you would here.
In fact, you would probably get more in person, since this is a forum designed for scientists and those interested in the subject.

I don't feel anythin when I see that picture. If it was a human corpse in the same situation, I might feel a tiny bit disgusted.
