Any good final year electronic project ideas?

    Proof of concept: Sandwich mobo

We have progressed from roomsized computers to mini-ITX motherboards. Further miniturisation could be made by using even smaller components, BUT as the motherboard and cpu get smaller and smaller, effective heatspreading area shrinks also. Higher cloclspeeds just exaberate this problem...

    The alternative solution:

Take current motherboard, cut in in halves, glue them back to back, leaving the spacy components, like PCI slots, cpu+fan on top and the low profile components, like memory, condensators etc on the bottom plate. Use interconnects and leave soom breathing space between the two halves for warm air to escape.

The research could be done, using old scrapheap 386/486 mobos, map all copperconnects and the length between the components in a database (use visio or sumthing, this will allow to make a drawing concept as well).

After that, remove all the components carefully have two plates halve the size of the original mobo, rebuild the connections.

If you can get this thing to boot up, you have made a major advancemnt in the electronics industry!

Imagine, this trick could even be used to cut the surface of the smallest VIA mobo in halve, just adding 1.5 somewhat inch to the height of the system.

The thing is, the solderiron and me are not the best of friends, otherwise I would have attempted it myselve

Furthermore multiple plates allow grouping related components at close proximity, simplifying topology and potentially increase reliabillity by decreasing latency.

The simplified topology could allow to shrink MORE than the initial halve of the original surface size , maybe to even to I estimate 35 percent of the original surface area.

This could either be used to make the motherboard even smaller or allows to cram more components/features within that space.

For example, the smallest mini-itx board only have one pci slot and no agp slot, kinda sucks. Sandwiching this board, while maintaining the form factor surface area leaves more than enough space to mount several pci slots and an agp slot, now we are talkin...
