Keith Moon: Oh yeah.
If you're putting together a ballot, Baker and Moon both must be on it.

Ya know, it's not easy to think of drummers. I don't even know the names of the drummers in many of my favorite bands like U2. Well, maybe it's just because I'm not a drummer. Drummers probably can't name a lot of bassists.
Hey, I just remembered a great one: Bill Bruford!

Hey, I just remembered another awesome drummer! If you've heard of a little band called STRATA, their drummer really kicks ass!!! (They used to be called DOWNSIDE, but now they're STRATA.)
Anyways, listen to these songs for some absolute kick-ass drumming...
1) The Panic, by Strata
2) Echelon, by 30 Seconds To Mars
3) Of The Room, by Dredg
And then tell me what you think! (If anyone actually takes the time to listen to these, that'd be awesome...) I'll be back later with a couple more, I suspect.

Danny Carey, Mike Portnoy

Charlie Benante from Anthrax, who is creative beyond just the drums, Wild Mick Brown from Dokken had a screaming solo during the Monsters of Rock tour, and while often overshadowed by his brother, Alex Van Halen could really work the skins.
Dave Grohl is the best of this generation, he's not just a drummer, he's huge, he's everywhere!

Dave Grohl killed Kurt Cobain.
Wesmorris:
Who is Stewart Copeland? You seem so sure that he's the greatest ever. What band is he from? I always seem to find your opinions to be well grounded...

OH MAN, you may not like the police, but listen to the drumming. I'm talking AMAZING. I've never heard anything remotely comparable to Stew's skill. Blows me away (er, used to). Still does when I think about how it used to.. but I'm jaded now and don't pay as much attention to music.
Well, and I was under the impression for a long period of time that it seriously was the general consensus that he was the best drummer who ever lived. Maybe that was a little bloated, but well.. the dude is amazing.

I'll definitely check them out...of course, ya know, I've heard of them. I just haven't paid them any attention. Ummm...
You should take my general advice to everyone from above and check out Dave Whitte. The guys work in Human Remains...SHIT!! They're like a post-hardcore expiremental death metal band. Really weird stuff going on. Crazy fucking shit. The singer sounds like someone is taking a crap in his mouth while he pukes it up simultaniously. I think they're amazing.
His work in Discordance Axis is very different from that of Human Remains, as it's a pure grindcore band. However his skill is no less amazing. Just a lot more blasting and speed. I recommend downloading the album "Complete Sound" as it has around 50+ tracks including a cover of "Gimme gimme gimme" which is histerical. They rule. Too bad theyre no longer together. Touring kills the best bands...
CHECK THEM OUT!!

Glad Buddy Rich & Gene Krupa were mentioned...
Compared with these guys, all those rock drummers sound like they're playing with one arm!
Plus, look at the kits these guys were using compared to the thousand & one gizmos these rock guys are using...
Still played rings around 'em!
Kieth Moon deserves a nod for sheer bizarreness.
Keeps a beat for a bit, then off on all sorts of tangents which are somehow still keeping time...

My vote is on Danny Carey from Tool.
Wesmorris - you may like the police, but you probably won't like one of Copeland's latest endevours. Still, try checking them out...
Oysterhead...
Trey Anastasio (of phish fame)
Les Claypool (simply one of the greatest oddball bassists in the world)
Stewie Copeland (fantastic drummer)
Believe me, the band is much more Claypool-esque than Anastasio or Copeland type music. Still, there are some songs with fantastic music, and Copeland - obviously - shines.

john bonham rules
two of my favorite drummers right now though are:
Chris Pennie- Dillinger Escape Plan
and Zach Hill- Hella, Teamsleep
both insane in their own way
~j
chris pennie is great, though i think the mark of a great drummer is learning how to do it both ways, not just balls out fast hard and crazy allt he time, but also slow and rythmic, powerful.

actually, some of my favorite parts that he does are the mellower, jazzy interludes
I also love the fact that he can reproduce that stuff live
