    Lack of WMD? No problem:
"The US ultimatum to Damascus consists of three demands, to be followed in the same order:

First ,give up the weapons of mass destruction that Saddam has secretly hidden in Syria. "

So bush and his oil thugs make Syria the patsy for the war and now have a nicely destabilized middle eastern economy and all the iraqui oil reserves. Bully for them.

Once again, the State Dept was outmaneuvered by an "inferior" state. Syria's response proposing a WMD-free mideast of course was immediately repudiated by the US: That's just going too far- Co-Secretaries of State Sharon and Powell want Syria to shut up about the issues and just do what they are told or else.

Then Syria should ratify the Geneva Protocol, something it hasn't done since signing it 35 years ago.

Basically, Syria is going to have to begin to cooperate, as much to their dismay, the victory in Iraq now turns the focus to their terrorism. Particularly as attention turns back to the Israel/Palestinian issue. Syria has long made trouble, shooting rockets off through their proxies in Lebanon. Syria is also on the cusp of some change, with a culture slightly more open than it was under Hafez Assad. Look to Syria trying to have it both ways, like the Saudis do, tossing some crumbs to the US and secretly cooperating while still making noises for public consumption.

[tone=exasperated and depressed]Why would they bother? The US ratified it and doesn't bother following it![/tone]
