Now they're eating Freedom Fries in the Congressional cafeteria. Americans are supposedly boycotting French products. Why not go all the way and return the Statue of Liberty, a gift of France?

Why? Some people stop buying french products to hurt the french economy. Once France sells or gives up something to us it does no good to get rid of it. Just dont buy any more.

Maybe because when they gave it to us they were respectable? Who would have thought a nation can advance to the rear as fast as France can...

i would say that it is we who were respectable at the time as well. i'm not sure they've changed much but this country has definitely gone downhill. our founding fathers must be turning in their graves. despite being a slave-raper, thomas jefferson was one of the best political thinkers of modern times and it's a damn shame the american government ignores him these days.

Fascist would be if the United States goverment made everybody not buy French products. Since we do it by choice we are not fascist.

Plus even if we were fachist then how can you boycott a socialist I mean fascist economy?

boycotting french products to hurt the french economy when your country is in an ideological battle with them.. ok, nothing wrong with it. renaming french fries freedom fries? a bit extreme and a bit silly i think.

"The U.S. and France share many trade similarities, particularly their global standing as the world's top 2 exporters in 3 very important sectors: defense products, agricultural goods, and services. Franco-American trade is also remarkable for its symmetry, as 6 of the top 10 exports are the same each way.

France has the fourth largest economy in the world after the U.S., Japan and Germany.

France is the second largest exporter of agricultural products in the world after the U.S.

In recent years, the U.S. has been the largest direct investor in France and France has been one of the three largest investors in the U.S.

French companies employ approximately 650,000 Americans. Among foreign countries doing business in the US, France employs the third largest number of Americans.

Overall, the French export more per capita than the Japanese and more than twice as much as the Americans. France is overall, the fourth largest exporting nation of the world.

France is the world's leader in the production of luxury goods.

Seven of France's top ten exports to the U.S. are industrial or high technology products.

France is the fourth largest producer of automobiles in the world (Renault, Peugeot, Citroën) and the third largest exporter. (All Mack trucks are manufactured by Renault.)

France is fourth in research among countries of the Organization for Economic Development and Cooperation (after Japan, Germany, and the US).

The French are a world leader in medical research: the AIDS virus was first isolated by French doctors.

The French are a leader in medical genetics (the Human Genome Project is located in Paris).

The French are the world's third manufacturers of electronics equipment.

European leader in aerospace (Aérospatiale, Arianespace, Airbus...).

Most commercial satellites are put into space on French Ariane rockets.

France is the world's third military power (after the US and Russia), and has the world's second largest defense industry (i.e. exocet missiles, radar technology.)

France is the world's second largest builder and exporter of civilian and military aircraft and helicopters (Airbus is the world's second largest fleet of commercial airliners, and many of the US Coast Guard helicopters are made by Aérospatiale in Toulouse.)

France has one of the most advanced systems of telecommunications in the world. Fiber optics were invented in France.

France is the world's largest manufacturer of television sets (HDTV was invented in France)."

Maybe not the most objective site, but i for one am reasonably sure about most of the points.

    Goodluck with boycotting them!

This is because i am not referring to french, eh, correction freedom fries... i'm referring to the title of the thread "French Products".

Probably, i should have put that into the subject line to make it more blindingly obvious. Sorry about that.

What about the Germans and Chinese?

So what about being fair? The only reason people pick on the French is because it's easy. "Ooh, let's call them freedom fries and freedom kisses and freedom poodles ...."

I noticed the other day that my daughter's pacifiers are German-made. Boycott "Nuk"! And Porsche/Audi/BMW/VW ... (we already boycott Peugots and Renaults ... for years I didn't know Renaults were being made) ...

And here's one for you that I'm hoping to hear on South Park: "Hewwo?! Shitty Wok! Yes our special tonight Kung Pao Freedom, Moo Goo Freedom Platter, and Egg Foo Freedom. With a qua't of Green Freedom Tea ..."

It's a lot harder to dish up the scorn in equal doses, isn't it?

Hell, I live in Washington. I think I can live without French wine. I want to know if my war-supporting conservative neighbors can survive a boycott of Mercedes-Benz and Chinese food. This is a software town, baby. Not a chance, not a chance.

Picking on the French is easy. Let's see people get off their lazy butts and, if they won't fight the wars they want so badly to sponsor, at least make a demonstrative effort to effect a boycott against things remotely German or Chinese.

Ridge says Mexico not punished for war stance (San Diego Union-Tribune). Quite obviously, Americans cannot survive a boycott of Mexico. We rely too much on underpaid Mexicans to keep our standard of living afloat. What's funny is that when I read about Vicente Fox finally getting to meet with Bush about certain things, I'm brought to mind of an appearance he made over a year ago on Charlie Rose in which he essentially pleaded with the Bush Administration to come back to the table on a number of issues that had gotten put aside for the War on Terror, such as Mexico's sizable commitment to the War on Drugs; unlike the US government, Fox could not promise to be able to afford to keep it up as long as Bush needed him to, which was a source of concern to the Mexican President.

But where's our boycott of Mexico? (We may treat the Mexicans like shite up here, but we can't survive without our inadequate exploitation of Mexican culture; it's easy enough to say you'll boycott Taco Bell, but let's see a full Mexican boycott. Actually, let's not, but you get the point. Uh ... I hope.)

None of these goofballs calling for a boycott of France will stay with it very long. A few idiots will personally boycott French products until they have been sufficiently outraged and then it will pass. Changing the names of fries and such by restaurants is nothing more than showing that they are 'all American'. There is nothing organized about the boycotts. It's not like Congress has passed an embargo act on French goods, or created a special import tariff for France, or dropped France from MFN status. So what if they aren't called French fries? That name never made sense anyway.
