    Was Saddam really that bad?

I have been watching the American, Britich, and Arabic news lately, specially their coverage of the Muslim Shia celebrations of their pilgrimage marking their guilt for killing Hussein, Prophet Muahmmed's grandson. Shias constitute 60% of Iraq population. I saw hundred of thousands people bleeding from self inflicted wounds. Some are dead from splitting their own skulls open with a machetti. Many hitting themselves without mercy with chain until their backs start bleeding........They are all under the impression that if they die that way, they'll go to Hussein and will come back as part of Mahdi soldier to rescue the earth......I ask

Does the US really know what they have got themselves into? Does the US have any experience dealing with such mentalities? Did we leave a country like Iraq up for grabs for Khomeiny likes?

I also ask.....How do you rule over people with such mentality. I don't see an option beside being a cruel dictator....I think Saddam was doing what he can to manage an extremely difficult group of people.....Sometimes the causes justify the actions I guess.......Any thoughts.

It's a legitimate question.....Have you ever had the pleasure of ruling such mob who enjoy splitting their own skulls open, and are ready to do anything..I mean anything if an Ayatullah produced for them a FATWA...a religious explanation or justification. Let me give you an example of FATWA:

    - Killing americans is okay, even civilians, because they are infedels.

    - Killing Muslim Sunni and kurds is okay, because based on our fanatic belief they are infedels.

    - Killing your family and yourself is okay, because it is a sacrifice in the name of the religion and will guarantee you a good afterlife...

-ect...ect.....Just name it, a FATWA can be produced to support it and millions of people are ready and competing to excute it.

Let's see US instill democracy in that environment....The only thing US will be doing is to find a person to put him in charge of this mess. Either a non religious militant, or a fanatic religious...Saddam belongs to the first category, so I guess we are getting a the fanatic Khomeiny, no other options really.

i live nearby shia communities. I have many many friends of them since years.

All what you said about them is bullshit, if you want I can tell you exactly why they do this and I can write you pages regarding their religion.

You are posting false information to the readers,

My eyes know what they saw on TV. My daughter happened to be in the room when one guy cried Husseign and lowered the Machetti to split his head in two.

No explanation is needed to such barbaric actions...I'm a muslim, and I only believe in god, no dead prophets or Kaliphas will ever get me to hurt myself, it's just absurd.

You must agree that it's tough to lead such groups of people who are constantly brainwashed by their Ayatullah.

I say, US better learn Shia version of Islam and get accustomed in writing FATWAS....That's the only way to get those people to go left or right.

Stop this reasonless bitching on the Shiaa because u dont understand their ways heflores . I dont call their actions any more barbaric than your celebration of Ramadan . I have seen many self-scarifications amongst many people , from Taoists to Muslims to Chrostians, it is a spiritual path they take , a path I do not understand , but a path I DO respect . The God you worship I consider just as absurd as u consider the worship of Imam Ali (PBUH) , yet I try to understand and study why you think in omniscient an omniscient God with qualities and attributes of a human , but instead of ending the book concluding : Absurd , I try to understand your psychology and history, and perhaps gain respect .

Religion deals with division , learn to understand one another instead of bitching how barbaric people are.....

But back on topic , USA indeed will have trouble to deal with the Shia , who most definetly want an Islamic state . Regardless USA wishes , I personally believe the Shiaa should have their own state , and Im sorry they're Arabs and not Persians , cuz they would go great with Iran .

And for Saddam........Im sorry but an Islamic state of Shiaa is much more righteous to ALL Iraqi than a secular semi-socialist state of one tribe from Tirkit who owns 24 palaces . I rather c 24 great mosques for the peoples of Islam .

USA will have great problems with the Shiaa , no matter how great their coprehension of the Fatwa concept is , it is not the Fatwa that makes them go left or roight , it is the one who is authorize dto call the Fatwa , no way USA will gain such a position , not even with deep infiltration within the religious authority system of the Shiaa . Perhaps they get far , but i will never stand , shit is way to obvious .......people wont go left/right , but grab rocks and throw at their false leaders .

Americans media and government can obviously sugar-coat even thinly-justified war enough to make it palateable to the public. But I expect the requisite repression necessary to bend fractious and downtrodden Iraq to America's will is become rapidly insupportable politically and fiscally. And we must not forget the saga isn't over in Afghanistan yet.

I will never understand these ways, they're beyond any reason....I don't like to judge a bunch of people that live today, but I know that the orgin and basis of their belief is distorted and pretty ugly. When the history of Islam is told, they were described as the villians...There was no need to separate from the muslims back when the religion was very pure just after the Prophet of the religion died...Shiaa are the founders of the current secular mess.....they live to be different, not to unite.

Now you are being rediculous......Why not lump in the easter and christmas while you are at it. How can you compare an 8 eight hour individual fast with suicide and self wounding...barbaric ideas that don't have any roots in the religion....The muslim short day Fasting is actually healthy for individuals...And mind you, we really enjoy our breakfast and make a feast out of the whole thing.

You are really confusing religion with commiting crimes here. Come on now.... You believe this man made crap and FATWAS have any religious basis...?
Excuse me, but I have to draw my line here, and I can't deal with everything in the name of religion. Not murder or brainwashing people to kill themselves in the name of religion or hurt themselves in the name of the religion..Next what, you'll ask me to tolerate seeing fathers throw their daughters in some river as sacrifice...this is not religion...this is ignorance and paganism...nothing to do with religion... You are asking me to tolerate the intolerable here..

What are you talking about....First you preach to me religious tolerance and understanding one another and you insult me....Then you say that one Islamic Shiaa state is much better than the current mixing of the Sunni and Shiaa....make your mind already....i.

the question was saddam really that bad is a poor one for several reasons.

1:He is probably still alive, the was should be an is.
2:really that bad? that's pretty general, who are you implying is thinking that saddam really was that bad? the general public, us, the media, the government? you should have asked was saddam really as bad as the ........ thinks he is?
3:by using the word "that" bad your asking if his death was warranted. if he was so bad THAT he deserved to die. we really don't know what has happened to Saddam Hussein, on a personal level for him, if he isnt dead, he isn't living like a bum that's for sure, it's irrelevant to ask the question when we do not know the mans fate.

His fate is sealed as far as being an Iraqi president. I think it's politically correct to refer to him as expresident Saddam. As far as him being dead or alive, I think that's irrelevant.

PS. When you create your own thread you are welcome to phrase it as you please....

Those Sunni palestines who bomb themselves in the name of GOD should fall in the same category right?

I don't want to judge suicide bombers, because every military have suicide squads. Japan have often used suicide missions in plans to hit targets. That's organized war and is a different issue.

Now tieing suicide bombers to hell and heaven is redicoulus. Noone knows what god will decide later.....It should not be linked religiously, more politically.

If Saddam Hussein has broken the law and tormented his own people, then yes he probably is a "bad" person.

Saddam did nothing more than any society with rebelious minority groups.

Sortta like US putting Japanease in concentration camps, arabs in Guantanamo Bay, and giving licenses and aid to stores that displayed signs saying no blacks or dogs allowed. Now Saddam had to deal with Shiaa who mutilate themselves for fun and kurds who are plotting behind his back to steal the northern oil fields and form a separate state.....Typical politics you know.
