I look around at the world and feel why are we doing this? After we are done with the middle east we should leave the world stage for 8 years to rebuild ourselves and reflect on ourselves as a society.

    Shadows,

What we need to do is vote our Idiot Emperor out of office. That would solve most of our problems immediately.

you cannot solve the world's problems because youre leaders are all wet fish. don't go on about how america is going to do this and america is going to do that.

america just have no idea of what they are doing, and the funny thing is they want the world to follow there lead.

let's all bow down to the greatest country on earth, where liberty has no meaning, there is no such thing as freedoms, and you just have to look at your peoples average consumption every year, to see, all the world is going to end up with is more c**p.

I'm sometimes accused of isolationism when opposing America's new personality. But America needn't be "isolationist" to solve her problems at home, and to regain the respect of the world through example- not through arrogance and belligerence. There will be fewer Americans living abroad now that we have decided on a policy of winning "friends" at gunpoint.

    The problem is...

...that many people like to demand that Americans mind their own business, but nobody likes it when they do.

Who does the world community call when people in third world countries need food?

Who does the world community call when people in third world countries need treatment for AIDS?

Who does the world community call when some European dictator with a funny moustache goes on a rampage?

Who does the world community call when some nation is struck by natural disaster?

When Americans take an active role in solving problems they are accused of imperialism and warmongering. When Americans mind their own business, as many people claim to want them to do, they are accused of isolationism and apathy toward their fellow man - often by the same people who previously demanded they mind their own business.

Americans need to accept the fact that much of the world hates them and will automatically position themselves to oppose anything they say or do, and should adjust their policy accordingly. Life is too short to devote so much time to trying to convince those who will never allow themselves to be convinced.

"According to the most recent foreign aid figures from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the U.S. ranks 22nd in the world in foreign aid as a percent of gross national product (GNP). The U.S. level is one-tenth of one percent of GNP, which is a quarter of the average percentage among developed countries. In total amount of foreign aid, the U.S. has ranked second behind Japan for several years and by increasing amounts ($6 billion in 1999). While the level of funding in the budget for foreign aid is still unknown, it is highly unlikely that it is sufficient to reverse the ranking of the U.S. in terms of foreign aid as a percent of GNP."

-US House of Representatives Budget Committee

The US is now spending at least 5x as much on warfare (125 Billion), compared with all foreign aid (25 billion).

    Putting it into perspective.

As for Isolationism...it's good for business. The Western World talks Globalization and the benefits it will bring, but misleads us into thinking the benefits are for the less fortunate. Furthermore we, in the Western World, strive to isolate ourselves from the rest of the world and its troubles, despite the sales pitch of Globalization..

    Hypocracy at its finest!

Do these figures take into account the amount of money spent on military and peacekeeping missions? When the Hutus and Tutsis start slaughtering one another, does the world community call on Japan to invade Rwanda?

Andy####, we know a whole lot better than the "kill the infidels"squad, the "anything america could ever possibly do"bums, and the "everything can be solved by talk" hippies. And just about ANYTHING other than saddam's goons or the assorted terrorist groups is an improvement for the middle east.

It is dangerous to assume that "goons & terrorists" are not on the rise as a direct result of America's new interventionism.
