Well it’s a good thing you posted, DJ Erock, because I’m just starting out with that program.
Now, I have somebody to drench in undulant floods of query whenever I require advice.
My goal is to
1) record my vocals.
2) make a beat with fruityloops
3) Put both my vocals and the beat together using some kind of program that does that. I hear cool edit is a good one.
I have no clue how to use this program.
Any suggestions for getting started?

fruity loops is easy enought to learn.
as for right now, don't worry about all the pretty little bells and wistles, stick with very basic beats for a while until you start to get the hang of it. the two main thing you need to get started are the "PL" and "SS" (top right corner) in the "ss" you create a loop. then in the pl (playlist) you can play that loops over and over along with other loops at the same time. to start a new loop, just click on the next pattern in the pl. its pretty easy to pick up. when you record your vocals, you can put them in the list of samples on the side by putting a copy of the wav file into your samples folder in the program folder. i would create a new folder in samples for them like "vocals" or something. then you can insert them as a channel, just like any other samples. ive attached a .flp file that i made as a good sample of a fairly easy song, feel free to do what you want with it, and i hope it will help, and its catchy!:p

How do I open up a list of the different beat sounds?

I hope that *.*flp didn't have any of your vocals dj erock...
cool edit is a good program, but I always had trouble finding a place to download it and a way to buy *cough*crack*cough* it... if you can I think it's pretty easy last time I checked.
If that doesn't work out for you another good sound editor is Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge 6.0.
Depending on the version of Fruity Loops that you have, you should have a large collection of sounds to mix with. You'll find them in a nice list in the program. In your program directory is the folder Samples like Dj was talking about- it's where the sounds are loaded from into the prog. You can import your own sounds directly into the samples folder and thus into the program itself.
If you get hooked on the prog like I did make sure you keep us updated with your stuff, if there's enough of us we can start a web ring maybe!

the list should come up as you open the program, and it should be docked on the left side of the screen. if its not there, than its another one of those buttons on the top right toolbar, im not at home so i can't check, but it seems to me that its the "gl" button. not sure what that stands for. :bugeye: keep bringing the questions, although i must admit i don't know everything about it. oh, and soundforge is def. a good program. also, if you want to dl some good beats to get your song going, maybe tweak them some, :p then get the beat packs off of kazaa.

Yeah, tweak them a lot, otherwise it’s unoriginal and gay

I finally found the list of all those sounds on the side.
I tried many of the out, but still cant find the type of sound I’m looking for.
Most of it is techno sounds.

Unfortunetly you'll find that fruity was made for techno music...it's not a bad thing cuz I love techno. But if you're looking to make some blue grass you're out of luck. The best part of Fruity, however, is you can import your own sounds. The trick is finding them. If you've got a microphone and an instrument you can add your own stuff (just like your vocals). I've done some things with my guitar (www.willhundredpercent.com) that you might find interesting (As horrible as it is you'll get the idea I think). There are beat packs and loops out there to buy or *cough*stealpayfor*cough* on Kazaa and else where. Experiment!

Is it really?
Don’t they have any hip hop lists?
I can’t find anything.
Can I import a beat from an mp3 file and edit it to sound how I want?

You've found the beat list right (sb)? Those are your sounds, that's all you've got until you get more. Yeah, you can import mp3s I think...if not just get an mp3 to wav converter and convert what you want. don't mistake Fruity Loops for a sound editor, because it's not. It just puts sounds together on a timeline so that they are rhythmic. You can tweak the sounds (pitch, note, etc) but no actual physical editing is done to the file.

i used to use fruity l00ps when i was experimenting with digital music creation...it was confusing. i stopped with digital music production shortly thereafter. :p

I use Fruity Loops to create realistic drums tracks, although it can do so much more I find it very usefull for writing whole drum tracks bar by bar, you get a real 'feel' that way I find. There are so many samples available on the net I reckon you can do just about any type of music you want. Add some Waves plug ins and it is an awesome program.

Does anybody know any good voice recorders?
I just attached a decent microphone to the soundcard, but only use window’s garbage recorder.
Does anybody know any good one that will let me add effects to my voice like multiplying it so I sound like 2 or 3 people?

Samplitude
Cool Edit Pro
Cubase
Logic Audio Platinum
N-Track
To name just 5, but there are loads. They will all allow you to add effects to your heart's desire. You can generally either get plug ins to add effects such as pitch shift, reverb, voice doubling, or you can usually do it with the effects built into the program.
N-Track I believe is free:

Save it as an .mp3 file and add it to your iTunes library.

Hahah, those are the two programs I use to record my music.
I either use Fruity Loops or manually make my own drumbeats by using the drum feature on my keyboard, and then use Cool Edit Pro to add some reverb for a little more of a realistic sound to it. I enjoy using Audacity to record, trim, and mix the tracks because of the program's simplicity.
All my instruments are cheap but hey...it gets the job done. And nothing's gonna stop me from writing and playing music.

Cubase is the business. When you first install it you might get latency issues, but that's more to do with Winblows than the program itself, so installASIO4ALL (http://www.asio4all.com/), after that things will be more realistic in terms of response. This will improve all sound progs, not just cubase.
