anyhoo, distributed computing is: "distributed processing of data and objects across a network of connected systems," according to <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,11769,00.asp">this</a>. i'd say it's a pretty good definition.

examples of public distributed computing projects currently running on the 'net include:

<b>distributed.net</b> - one of the larger initiatives, their goals include competing in RSA Labs' RC5-xx codebreaking challenges, as well as finding new Optimal Golomb Rulers. (<a href="http://www.distributed.net/">link</a>)
<b>SETI@home</b> - "a scientific experiment that uses Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a free program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data." (<a href="http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/">link</a>)
<b>GIMPS</b> - the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search, this project searches for the next prime of the form 2^P-1 (a Mersenne number). they admit that this adventure has limited practical application, but finding new primes has been a hobby of mathematicians for a very long time.
