I'm basically new to Linux, been using Mandrake for about a week, but I haven't done what I was meant to do the first few days, and that was set back up the home network. I was wondering if there is anyone who can help to do that, as I am not yet sure what I am meant to do to set that back up.

Now I have two computers, one running Mandrake 9.0, the other running microcrap XP. Ok, two separate computers. Sorry, every time I have ask someone in a Linux support group they keep coming back at me that I have one computer that has Linux and windows on it, argh. They are connected through Ethernet cable, thingy, great with technical talk aren't i

The XP computer is set up, as far as I know, ran the wizard on that. But the Mandrake one, hmmmmm. When I installed I went through the wizard there for the network. Then I was told by someone in a Linux group to go to Mandrake control center, mount points, then click on Samba and it would do everything for me. Click on Samba and it does nothing.

So if anyone has any suggestions could you please e-mail me at antirj@hotmail.com, and chances are I have set it up all wrong as I have no idea what I am doing :0)

    thanks

My friend managed to get Mandrake 9.0 running on a network with a WinME machine acting as it's gateway.

I suppose it's dependant on what GUI you decided to use (GNOME? KDE? etc)

I had to set it up for him, from what I remember it was pretty easy.

You just have to remember that all computers communicate through a network by assigning themselves an address.
(This is IP for everything, but MAC has a MAC address which I believe [Correct me If I'm wrong] can identify peripheral addresses. Not of course you needed to know this.)

Now in the instance of my friends machine, his WinME gateway is set-up as something like:

    OS: WinME
    Computer name: Bessy
    Windows Network: Apartment
    IP: 169.254.0.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

    OS: Mandrake 9.0
    Computer name: Johnny
    Windows Network (SAMBA): Apartment
    IP: 169.254.0.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 169.254.0.1

(This is running WinME with "INTERNET SHARING" which allows it to act as a Gateway.)

What trouble you might be having with Mandrake is simple, you might be setting it up for the WRONG PRIVILEDGE. Namely your setting it up from ROOT but are then trying to use it as USER.

The answer there is you have to set it up as USER, to run as USER.
