I got the idea to free some space in my HDD , about 5GB,
then when I install linux, let it choose the free space.

In the current market, total got how many Distribution of Linux ?
What I know is Redhat, Mandrake, Suse, Slackware.

Compare Redhat and Mandrake, which is better for a newbie?

I'm not exactly sure as I was feeling very suicidal that day and went straight for Sorceror (a distro where you have to compile everything) because it's a tad faster.

My father has used Redhat in the past and gotten it up and running with minimal hassle.

Whatever you do, don't install XP under NTFS, use FAT32. I am pretty sure you can dual -boot off the same HD using FAT32 as the windows file system. Linux is just a big fat pain in the ass with NTFS on the windows partition, even more so if you want to access any window files from linux.

I just did that very thing 4 days ago durning the middle of the night on a whim.

I installed RedHat 8.0 and XP on this computer and the procedure was relatively painless.

    Here's what I did:

I booted of the WinXP and used it to split my primary disk in half NTFS/Unpartitioned, you can use FAT32 if you think that's better. After installing XP and checking to see if it was working I booted of the RedHat CD and partitioned up the remaining 50% of the disk, I think DiskDruid will do this for you so long as you have unpartitioned space. Pick LILO as the bootloader and it'll do everything for you. Voila, you have yourself an RH/XP dualboot machine. RedHat installation is as userfriendly and simple as the windows installation (if not more so).

Just make sure you install Windows first so you don't have to go through the hazzle of writing your bootloader manually.

    DCLXVI, your suggestion is right.
    I will do likewise.
