what percentage of people say carrot if you just ask them?

grazzhoppa
02-03-03, 06:45 PM
after saying "six" a bunch of times it turns into "sticks," then when you are asked to think of a vegetable quickly...sticks come into mind....sticks...sticks....carrot sticks!

Persol

I must be odd... I thought of asparagus... my six mustated in a different direction:)

There's something really wrong with me - I thought of a tomato. And tomatoes aren't even vegetables, they're fruits. :(

98% answer either carrot or potato. This is due to the fact that both carrot and potato are six letter words and are common to most Americans.

http://www.ronine.com/mquiz2.htm

I'd love to see a real study into this, and not just an internet thing. Is there something to it, or is it yet another coincidence factor that the human mind tries to make sense of by seeing a reason behind it, like numerology and astrology?

i did say carrot but only becoz id seen these things before. when it asked for the veggie i knew what you were expecting and couldnt help thinking about it. if you do this test in a couple of months again i dont think any of you who tried it would be able to stop thinking about carrots...and thats probably including the 'special' ones ::D

Hi, this test is also known to work for finnish people who thinks it in finnish,so it doesn't come from six ->stick -> carrot stick or six as six letters in 'carrot' or 'potato' . Carrot is Porkkana in finnish and doesn't have six letters. So if anyone have any other ideas why most of us gets 'carrot' after replying '6' in their mind, please feel free to tell :)

THE ANSWER MADE OFFICIALLY BY ME

I think that I have a theory that may work... Ok there is this guy that proposed a theory that our mind has a "shadow side," that we ourselves our never aware of, it what is put deep in the reccesses of your brain (to make you forget certain things that you yourself refuse to accept like childhood prejudice, this is also the part of your brain that is active in hypnosis) ok, as you scroll down you may not be aware (you can kind of see it in the corner of your eyes) but your shadow side is constantly recording the details, and since carrots are one of the most popular vegetable as proved in a recent Baylor Survey, and your shadow side is constantly recording those ">" (which look like a carrot) things then your brain makes a click somewhere in a unknown part of the cerebrum, that forces you to pick a carrot... However, for the 2% who dont think of a carrot then you probably are unaware of carrots, you have never eaten carrots, you dont care for carrots

Lamans Terms: If you havent experienced a carrot very very often and havent regarded it as extremely distasteful or extremely delicious then you wont think of a carrot, and your mind will think of some deluded akward thing

Weiser_Dub

First thing that popped into my mind was a picture of broccoli (my favorite veggie) but I couldn't think of the word, and then a carrot came flying in from the right, and bam... I said "carrot"

first off, most versions of this dont include the ">", he probably got it out of an email which had been forwarded many times. Second off, "However, for the 2% who dont think of a carrot then you probably are unaware of carrots, you have never eaten carrots, you dont care for carrots" it seems to me, out of sciforumers, more then 2% have goten something other then carrot. Does that mean that people who think differently seem to congregate here? ui think so. as to not knowing of carrots? i dont think theres a single computer user in the united states who couldnt identify a carrot. They've worked there way intot he mainstream on a large part. I think what its really doing is taking the american standardized way of teaching, and running the mind through loops that get it to visualize a carrot. everythings pretty standard. what if 98% of peopleused a childs primer that had the sixth vegetable pictured being a carrot? or on oage 6 of some widly read childrens books theres a ryhme about carrots, and all the 6 talk makes us remember them? i think thats more plausible considering your basing your argument on the ">" symbol, which is absent from most of the versions of this test, heres another one, without the ">", how do you explain this one?

==========================================

DON'T scroll down too fast - do it slowly and follow the instructions below exactly, do the math in your head as fast as you can. It may help to say the answers aloud quietly. FOLLOW these instructions one at a time and as quickly as you can!

What is:

2+2?

4+4?

8+8?

16+16?

Quick! Pick a number between 12 and 5.

Got it?

Now scroll down...

The number you picked was 7, right?

Isn't that weird???

actually i picked 11

lixluke
03-31-03, 10:23 PM
Broccoli.

I beleive it too.

I used to do this trick with the number 5.

I would write down the vegetable, and hide it.
It's not a carrot.
Then I would do the trick.
Every time I did it, they would say the same vegetable.

I should do it here.

(By the way, I got 7 on that one. I really am a mindless wired drone.)

i bought a 5 lb bag of carrots yesterday and have been thinking about making morotssoppa all day so actually when i got to the vegetable part, i consciously thought about how i've been wanting carrots. any other day though, i tell you!

I got 7 too... I think it has to do with 12-5=7. You're used to seeing numbers in the form of math problems, so that's the way you automatically interpret those numbers.

At least that's my guess.

Damn, I said purple, then went "wait a minute???" and said cucumber. WTF, why purple? Maybe because the last time I did math today was when I was doing some graphics editing and purple was the second most important color in the piece. Who wants to be a 98%'er anyways?

I personally think it is because...:
12 and 5
..2+5...

so many didn't even say a vegetable

my roommate said pineapple. "that's a fruit". then she said tomato. "that's a fruit too". then she said potato but i deemed the whole thing flawed cause she had to think about it. cucumbers and tomatos are both formed from flowers, hence fruit.

Yes, but... I'm a German and I also thought carrot, which is Karotte in German...
Tomato was in my mind for a moment, but the carrot won :-)
Not to forget salad, but I couldn't remember the word for that...

Creepy!

But I ate carrots just half an hour ago (together with apples, cheese and some more fruits).

Thanks, great to see how much can be expected easily!

That is odd. I got carrot, also. I'm a native english speaker. It is odd that a Finnish person would get the same vegetable..

Also, for the second, i thought of 13 first, then 7. The math part is easily explained because of homework and repition etc. the vegetable thing... sounds like something one of us could do a dissertation on

Is it not possible that carrots may just happen to be the most popular vegetable or perhaps it's a freudian slip. My vegetable thought was turnip because I like turnips. In fact some of my best friends are turnips.

I believe batrave is a beat, I guessed 8 and a cucumber. but arithmatic doesn't come as quickly as most people, so I was probably thinking the difference was 8 lol

My thoughts went along the lines of freudian slips too.. So what does that say about us who thought about cucumbers? :D

And incidentily, "six" in swedish translates to "sex". And we all know what that means. :)
