Honda's Asimo robot. It rocks. The movement is amazing.

homoform robots are over rated. It is just too hard to get a machine to balance on two legs.
Personally I think a good tripod based robot would work best.

    Clockwood,

Yes but Honda does have a walking robot that can balance very well, can negotiate stairs with ease, and can twist and turn with motion very similar to humans.

this is only a small step towards something greater. The robot can balance better whan other designed robots but it's still no way near human capabilites in motor skills. Here's to future reasearch in better moving robots to make our lives easier......

I think this robot is getting better year by year.
Even though the robot is spineless and the gyrodynes used to throw the robot out of balance after 8 minutes, the introduction of analouge circuits has really improved the thing.
The day it is able to do the decathalon will be a day to remember.
Imagine if it were allowed to enter the olympics.
Where are we going to send it first? moon, mars, bottom of ocean?

Does anybody know where the name came from? Perhaps Asimov?

Bipedal robots are really just something to get peoples interest, building something that mimics their own movements, potentially in their own image.

The reality of robotics is that if you have a job that you want a robot to do, then you build the robot to the task it's set. So for the most case a Bipedal walker isn't going to be what most people would build, since they would want something thats stable and able to cover it's duties.

admittedly if it was possible to create something with a similar skeletal alignment to ourselves, it could do the jobs that we do, however if you were looking at ergonomics on those jobs, why build it like us, why not more to the capacity of the job?

YES, that's where they derived it from.

This is true in a sense, but think of the history of computers. In the past computers had been designed for specific problems. No one thought that computers would be good for much more than complicated math, maybe some communications applications. But certain visionaries like Alan Turing, envisioned a more general purpose computer, and look at all the things they are capable of now.

We already know that a human body is a pretty general purpose device, and trying to build a machine that does what we do, only better, gets us a nice general purpose robot. Who knows, design theory like this could lead to robots doing all sorts of things for us, the same robot even, not different ones.

But on the face of it, yes Honda is probably only funding all this to keep their name in the headlines and their brand strong.

All this talk of "general purpose" robots, it's silly, really. Why don't we all just come right out and say what we're thinking about? We want hot dirty robot sex! Robot on robot, robot on human, it doesn't matter, we want it all! We won't be happy until our cell phones can give us blowjobs!

    Yes!!!YES!!!YES!!!!
    Dirty robot sex.
Hybrid robot/blender machines that never get headaches.
No more cooking meals for your partner, no more being told that a sausage roll with a bit of mayo isn't very inviting.
If you go to the 'real doll' website you'll realise it's not that far away.
If you find the realdoll repair site you'll wet yourself. How did he manage to break it's neck??????????!!!!!!!!

Seriously, the sex industry will probably drive the robotics industry in the future.
I really think once they have the mechanics for the body sorted they will go for synthetic emotions.
    Supply and demand.
The better they get, the better we want them. Like cars.
A general purpose robot that tells you it was nice washing the dishes?

Take cyberdildonics, people won't use them if someone they don't know is controlling them, but one that knows what mood your in is something else.

I think that with all these robots doing peoples jobs were going to get really, really fat and the world will deteriorate into nothing but fat people laying around watching reality TV. GO OUT AND MOW YOUR OWN @#%@#$% LAWN.

When I said "general purpose" I did indeed mean deviant robot intercourse.

Wait a minuet, did you just say cyberdildonics? Sir, we've got to go into business together!

So long as your not confusing it with teledildonics!

and why do girls pretend to be put off by such talk, they love it.
Checkout the male real doll, it's a rather ill looking sylvester stalone with a little problem.

What's AI got to do with this?
How about a prosthetic that has sense enough to orgasm after stimulation.
It wouldn't need alot of sense so a standard pc could be used for the control.
A simple REAL AI problem with a 'simple' achievable solution.
A neural network program hooked up to something real, now were getting somewhere, who cares what it's used for?
    And there's a ready market.

And the perversion continues. I don't think The Terminator would approve.
