Well, I haven't noticed a thread on this here. This is just my view on social anxiety, or social phobia as it is often called.

I think ''Social Anxiety'' or ''Social Phobia'' have a lot of myths and facts surrounding them generally, which i'd like to explore and go into detail.

I believe ''Social Anxiety'' is a learned trait from negative past experiences, or an inherited trait from social sorroundings, or a social unit, be it their parents, or their environment.

I do believe it's perfectly normal given environmental and social factors which might cause the sufferer to experience increased anxiety, worry, or panic.

I think our thought processes obviously play a huge part in day to day life. If they're obscured, or abnormal, it can hinder us in normal areas of our social routine.

I also believe most people don't have social anxiety. A lot including myself are introverts who'd rather avoid the bar, the pub, or whatever social gatherings they'd have been invited to.

If you don't want to go to the bar, pub, or whatever. It just means you just don't want to be there, and would much rather do something constructive with your time.

I think Social Anxiety is very treatable with CBT, or different forms of exposure therapy.

So what are your thoughts on this?

CBT is the treatment of choice for this stuff, yes. You have to realize your fears are unreasonable and push yourself to overcome them until it becomes a habit.

in philosophy class we just debated this (as well as the validity of other "disorders" like ADD)

personally, I am skeptical that these disorders are purely neurological (or biological or whatever)

I think it's more likely that ADD is merely "selective interest" and social anxiety might just be shyness, or maybe the result of alcoholic father's... ehh i got all kinds of weird theories...

I imagine social anxiety is like most disorders: physiologic vulnerability meets triggering circumstance, with a few people simply having it for no apparent external reason.

Oddly enough, I remember reading somewhere that of all psych issues, it's ADHD with the highest inheritability at around 80%, followed by schizophrenia. There's a 75% chance the child will develop it if both parents have the disorder.

Well, I think that "Social Anxiety" is completely understandable whenever it is experienced by persons. Considering today's social realities, such as:

    1) the great number of America's Socialists (Marxists)

    2) the number of politely complimented females that respond by exclaiming; "F@#$ Off A$$hole"

    3) the great number of internet videos that recorded assault & attempted murder perpetrated by government agency personnel with psychological authoritarian, & physical steroid, addictions that pose a great danger to the surrounding members of society

    4) the great number of "Bellvue" escaped persons believing themselves to be 2 handed Apes that are biologically composed 100% of an accumulation of retained genetic, defects and having a genealogical heritage that includes "ancestral bacterial forebears". They've also been known to think themselves Henry VIII reincarnated... "Ole", Viva 4 Legged Whales & Tyrannosaurus Chickens.

    5) The fact that 80% of the world's psychotropic drugs are peddled within America...which had already become the wealthiest nation in the world. Implying that "crazy" is conducive of prosperity & validated by the existence of the wealthiest politician in Washington...Nancy Pelosi... ex-speech impediment, "Incoherent Speaker of the House", that while lacking lucidity, babbles her way to reelection by Magical Man-Fairies

Millions are made dangerously dysfunctional by deranging psychotropic drugs & their sales statistics strongly suggest that its validated by America's unprecedented economic & financial woe's...not to mention, Pelosi's exceedingly retarded, "contraceptive economic policies"

    6) I'm extremely understanding of "Social Anxiety", considering the city where I live... in which pretty women have existed in a grand total number of about 3...whom I already dated many years ago. It can get quite scary out there

Nevertheless, every bartender at the pub near my home, knows better than to even think about checking if my imperial pint glass requires a refill at a rate more frequent than a night's grand total of 2 per 4 or 5 hours... due to the fact that emptying the glass requires taking drinks. However, taking drinks requires one to stop talking/"socializing"

If too soon they ask; "ready for another one?"... it gives me "anxiety"

Interesting analysis. I don't think I understand exactly all the stuff you are insinuating . I do like the Tyrannosaurus chicken quote . Would that be like extra big chickens or real angry chickens? Like big mad birds afraid to do any thing about it.

Social anxiety is the fear of evaluated negatively by other people, embarrassment, humiliation, and depression. Social Anxiety Disorder is afraid that he or she will make mistakes and humiliated in front of others.

oh yeah? so even though I'm convinced I'm the coolest motha***** around, I avoid social situations like the plague because I fear rejection?

ohh wait--- I think I get it-- you are right! They will reject me because of my undeniable superiority of mind, appearance, and charm.
so yes, social anxiety is rooted in fear of rejection! (and in this case, it's also rooted in highly caffeinated narcissism)

It probably has some connections with autism as well. I've experienced such symptoms in certain social situations where I have to flee (I have Asperger's syndrome), or risk passing out. It doesn't come up much any more, since I have learned to avoid these situations.

Social Anxiety is the fear of social situations and the interaction with other people that can automatically bring on feelings of self-consciousness, judgment, evaluation, and inferiority.
I think Millions of people all over the world suffer from this devastating and traumatic problem every day.

I went from suffering crippling social anxiety that caused me to chug back multiple beers on my drive to work in a small (7-person) office. To giving lectures in front of 300+ students and having fun without a single worry.

Answer: Meditate for 15 minutes a day.
Time to clear problem: About 1 year.

I used to have that fairly bad...being morbidly obese in school kinda turns you into a giant waddling target, and I don't think I got over the aftereffects of that until about 26.
Getting made fun of by an entire school bus full of kids, then being hit over the head with a bag of marbles...being made fun of every day, people snickering at me...despising myself...yeahhh.
...I find straight-line agoraphobia to be a vast improvement.

Doesn't hurt that I lost the equivalent of a small person in weight.

If you were feeling a physical effect, it was likely caused by not breathing correctly. I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't feel anxious on waking and just thought "Oh I've got to go to the office, why am I so nervous?".

When you sleep you automatically breath more shallowly, this lessens the oxygen you take in and causes drowsiness, on waking your body is still suffering from a mild form of asphyxiation which can cause an increase in anxiety.

The simplest method of dealing with this morning anxiety is just to Breath, either extremely heavily or just short but fast breaths for a minute or two. You should notice the difference if you suffer anxiety.

Of course this is a little different from the psychological anxiety caused by worrying, all that can really be done there is to not think about what is causing the concern, which will often seem impossible.
